Harrold ISD in Wilbarger county, Texas, has had an employee concealed handgun policy in effect since 2007 in order to make its schools as safe as possible for its students. David Thweatt, the Harrold ISD Superintendent who proposed and implemented the plan, will be the featured speaker at the May 15 lunch meeting of the Denton Republican Women's Club. His district's "Guardian Plan" marked the first time any school in the country permitted select teachers and staff to carry concealed weapons. After the Newtown, Connecticut school shooting, Harrold ISD's Guardian Plan was praised as a common-sense approach to protecting America's school children.

New Pollinator Garden Opening at LLELA

Visitors of all ages are invited to participate in the grand opening of a new Pollinator Garden, located near the Cicada Pavilion at LLELA. The Pollinator Garden provides a great opportunity to view North Texas prairie grasses and wildflowers. The garden will also give a boost to our native pollinators by encouraging the plants they depend on. Populations of bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects are in steep decline across the United States due to loss of habitat, overuse of insecticides and other environmental issues. Without these often unappreciated creatures, about 75 percent of our flowering plants and crops would not develop fruit or seeds. Though it is new, the garden is already full of life. A variety of butterflies have been documented, including swallowtails, monarchs, queens, sulphurs, pearl crescents, buckeyes, emperors, question marks, red admirals, fritillaries and others. Along with the butterflies and bees, the garden has been buzzing with volunteer activity, as the project is almost entirely a volunteer effort, led by Master Gardener Rosemary Carrizales. LLELA is grateful to the dedicated volunteers who have made the Pollinator Garden a reality.
