Winter storm aftermath: good news and bad news
By Dan Eakin, Staff Writer
There is good news and bad news after the winter storm that hit the area Thursday, bringing a lot of ice and a little snow.
The good news is that there were no fatalities reported from any of the large number of wrecks that occurred on slick streets, highways and bridges on Thursday and Friday.
No outages of power were reported in the immediate area, although a few were without power for a while in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
Definitely bad news for the kids was the fact that, although a lot of ice formed, not enough snow fell to build a good snowman or even have a good snowball fight.
It was all bad news for the drivers of 10 vehicles that wrecked between 6 a.m. and 3 p.m. Thursday on slick streets in Lewisville.
On Thursday morning, two people had to be rescued from a vehicle that had with another on State Highway 121 near Main Street in Lewisville. They were taken to Parkland Hospital, but their injuries are not believed to be serious.
Also, there were no injuries after a car completely flipped over on S.H. 121 at MacArthur Thursday afternoon.
One of the biggest problems caused by the bad weather was the backup of traffic on highways in the area, causing drivers to be frustrated at the situation.
Traffic snowballed for several miles north and south of Lake Lewisville as drivers had to use extreme caution on the icy bridge.
Friday morning, motorists found themselves frozen in their tracks for almost an hour on I-35 after a truck jackknifed at Frankford.
Motorists trying to travel northeast towards Grapevine also found themselves crawling on icy S.H. 121 from William Tate Boulevard to near the airport for more than two hours Friday morning.
The Texas Department of Public Safety reported working a total of 35 wrecks outside of cities in Denton County Thursday, with no serious injuries reported.
In Flower Mound, police only responded to two accidents, one of those involved a car running a stop-sign, Wendell Mitchell, Public Information Officer for Flower Mound Police Department, said.
“The roads were in good condition. The bridges had some icy patches,” Mitchell said.
Overall, conditions were close to normal and drivers seemed to appreciate the weather enough that they adjusted their driving to it, he said.
