Donations make a merry Christmas for non-profits
By Brandi Hart, McKinney Courier-Gazette
People who donated food, gifts, clothing, coats, and blankets to the Samaritan Inn in McKinney made a very memorable Christmas for the Inn's 120 residents. Many of them and others also brightened the holiday for clients of other non-profit and charitable organizations in McKinney and Collin County who received generous donations.
The Samaritan Inn houses homeless people and offers classes to help them rent their own apartment or home, or eventually purchase one. Thirty percent of the Inn's residents are children ages 10 and younger, who received scooters and roller skates, among other gifts for Christmas, according to Lynne Sipiora, the executive director of the Samaritan Inn.
People donated turkeys and hams, along with new and gently used clothing items and blankets to the Samaritan Inn, located at 1725 N. McDonald Street.
“We had a bunch of children who were running around on scooters and roller skates down the halls, and we don't usually allow that, but we did on Christmas. Some people said it was the best Christmas they've ever had. We are so thankful to everyone who donated food, clothing, blankets, and gifts,” Sipiora said.
The Collin County Children's Advocacy Center in Plano also received numerous donations that were given to children throughout Collin County. The center gave gifts to 1,100 needy children in Collin County this Christmas that were collected in its annual Holly Jolly Holiday Project. The purpose of the project was to help children in foster care and support the children who use the center, said Michelle Schuback, the center's community resource director.
“We have a lot of corporate donors, primarily in Collin County, who did gift card drives and toy drives. We had a couple of businesses who adopted kids for Christmas and their employees donated toys and items the children asked for,” Schuback said.
Tenants in some local apartment complexes also collected new toys and items for children who benefit from the Collin County Advocacy Center. Approximately 1,100 children received $100 worth of gifts or gift cards each. Ten of the neediest families who use resources at the center received $1,000 per family, Schubach said.
People also donated numerous perishable food items to the McKinney Commun-ity Food Pantry before Thanks-giving and through Christmas. The amount of donated food was unknown at press time on Tuesday, a day in which the McKinney Community Food Pantry was closed.
People also donated gifts to the Salvation Army of McKinney's Angel Tree drive and money in the red kettles located in front of many stores throughout McKinney. No one could be reached at the Salvation Army in McKinney on Tuesday, as it was closed because of the holiday.
