The McKinney Boyd Broadway Broncos got into high school mode at their opening performance of “High School Musical” on Wednesday evening.
For sophomore Lauryn Reid, playing braniac Gabriella Montez was like seeing a mirror image of herself.
“Sometimes, she reminds me a lot of myself,” Reid said.
“She stays in her own little world,” Reid said. “I like how she does well in school and she likes to sing.”
McKinney Boyd junior Don Denham also identifies with playing popular basketball star Troy Bolton.
“I identify with him mildly,” Denham said. “He's kind of going against the current.”
Unlike choir and band student Reid, Denham is a theater student who isn't a part of the school music program.
“I sang in a band for a while,” Denham said.
While “High School Musical” is practically a household name, McKinney Boyd theater director Vicki Kirkley said that was one of the reasons she chose the show.
“It is very popular but that's one of the reasons I chose it,” Kirkley said. “The whole district is buzzing about this musical.”
Preparing for this production, Kirkley said, has been a challenge since McKinney Boyd doesn't have a stage to perform on.
“We had to literally build one from the cafeteria,” Kirkley said. “We've been working on it since the beginning of January.”
Kirkley said while auditioning for the roles, like the show, she wanted to go outside of the box and not necessarily choose students in the theater program.
“For me, I always look for the best people for the job,” Kirkley said. “We have people in the show who aren't in the fine arts at all.”
While it may seem like “High School Musical” is being performed every where, Denham said he thinks the show will draw in a large audience.
“I really was not aware so many people were doing it until recently,” Denham said. “With Disney in general, you have a guaranteed audience.”
With catchy songs and great lessons to be learned, Reid said she anticipates seeing a lot of children attending the performance.
“I'm expecting some kids to be mumbling singing,” she said.
“High School Musical” will start at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 1, 2 and 5 and at 2 p.m. Feb. 4. Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door. For more information or to purchase tickets, contact Vicki Kirkley at vkirkley@mckinneyisd.net.
