Senior citizen crashes into Plano grocery store
By Josh Hixson, Staff Writer
An elderly man, driving a Kia four-door sedan, drove through the entrance of a Tom Thumb grocery store located at 3100 Independence Parkway in Plano Wednesday night.
At about 7:30 p.m. witnesses saw the man take his parked car, drive it into a light pole in the parking lot and then crash it through the glass doors at the front of the grocery store.
David Martin, a Plano resident and Tom Thumb employee, said he saw the driver attempt to put the car into gear and over accelerate the engine, causing the car to leap forward once it was in drive.
“I couldn’t get in the driver’s side door or the passenger side door because they were wedged in,” Martin said. “He was smoking a cigarette and I smelled gasoline. I said ‘Give me the cigarette.’ He took another drag off the cigarette and I said ‘Give me that cigarette before you kill us.’”
A nurse arrived shortly after Martin and checked to see if the driver was injured. The driver of the Kia assured her he was uninjured, according to Martin.
The two waited with the driver until emergency medical services arrived and extracted him from the car.
The deli section employee said many of the store’s customers saw the car drive into the front entrance.
Andrew Sartor, 18, of Plano, was working at his father’s business Sartor TV and Video, when he saw the accident take place.
“I was outside talking to a customer,” Sartor said. “I heard a big ‘boom’ and I started running. I saw the glass shattered everywhere.”
Police at the scene said no one was injured during the accident and declined further comment.

" how about we actually test anyone above the age of lets say 60, every time they renew their licence, or would that be too much for the state to handle just to save a couple of lives? "
