Frisco's Freedom Fest to feature largest fireworks display
By Bria Bolton, staff writer
For the sixth year in a row, Frisco's Freedom Fest will provide food, fun, fireworks, and plenty of red, white, and blue this Independence Day.
The celebration will include an FC Dallas soccer game, Clay Aiken and Philharmonic Orchestra Concert, Children's Expo, Community Stage, Taste of Frisco, Hometown Heroes Exhibit, Party in the Plaza, and, of course, fireworks.
"It's always been something that our families have looked forward to, and we're excited about it this year again more than ever," Frisco Mayor Mike Simpson said.
The Party In The Plaza will begin at 4 p.m. and continue until the fireworks end. The Party includes a Children's Expo, the Community Stage, and the Hometown Heroes Exhibit. The Children's Expo festivities, made possible by Centennial Medical Center, will include inflatables, face painting, clown puppeteers, balloon artists, magicians, and an obstacle course.
"By having the events starting early in the day, around the Plaza in front of city hall, it (Freedom Fest) will bring back something everybody likes and that is the Taste of Frisco," Simpson said. Local restaurants will be serving up various cuisines during the Taste of Frisco. Fox Sports Grill, Starbucks, Marble Slab Creamery, Cantina Laredo, and California Pizza Kitchen are just a few of the restaurants participating.
Members of the Frisco area will showcase their varied talent throughout the evening at the Community Stage. After seeking local talent around Frisco through a press release, posters, and word of mouth, 30 applications were submitted, said Christie Hartwell with the communications and media relations department at the City of Frisco. A committee of 10 people chose all of the performers. Five bands, eight soloists, one instrumental group, one dance group, one pianist, one rapper, and one duet will perform. All of the acts were chosen with the audience in mind.
"We selected Midlife Crisis to play last because they're a cover band and we felt at an event like this, people love to sing along," Hartwell said.
The Hometown Heroes Exhibit will allow festival-goers the chance to meet the police officers and firefighters that serve them daily. The 1940 model Frisco Fire Truck and other official vehicles will be on display, and safety information and tips will be available.
An FC Dallas soccer game will also part of the Fourth of July celebration. FC Dallas versus Chivas USA will kick off at 5:30 p.m., and Clay Aiken will perform with the Philharmonic Orchestra from 8 to 9:30 p.m. Both events will be at Pizza Hut Park.
An elaborate fireworks show will end the evening.
"The fireworks display is going to be the largest fireworks display in the whole North Texas area," Simpson said.
The fireworks show will last approximately 20 minutes and will be launched from the soccer fields on the north side of Pizza Hut Park.
Admission to Party in the Plaza and Taste of Frisco is free and tickets for the soccer match and Clay Aiken concert are $21, $29, $33, $37, $50, and $75, depending on seat location. Tickets are available at Ticketmaster, Pizza Hut Park's North Box Office, or by calling 888-FCD-GOAL.
Jennifer Kimble, special projects and volunteer coordinator for the city, said she believes Freedom Fest is the best destination for family fun on the fourth.
"We are one of very few cities that actually has a celebration on July the fourth. A lot of cities do it before that date." Kimble said.
The city has been preparing for Freedom Fest since March and is expecting about 20,000 attendees.
Parking at Pizza Hut Park and Frisco Square is free, but space is limited. There will also be a free shuttle to and from Wakeland High School and Staley Middle School from 3:30 p.m. until 30 minutes after the fireworks end.

" This all sounds so wonderful! I wish I lived in the Area instead of in the East. What you are doing for the people is fantastic. And to top it off with the soccer game and Clay Aiken is something I would have loved to have been able to go. You should be proud of what you are doing for your city. Hooray for you! "
