Frisco mural vandalized just before being finished

Members of the Visual Arts Guild of Frisco survey the damage done to the mural they have been working on for over three months in downtown Frisco next to the gazebo. Some time on Friday night or early Saturday morning someone splashed this mural with paint. A shoe print was left at the scene, but other than that, there is little evidence, according to Sgt. Gerald Meadors with the Frisco Police Department. The latest addition to the mural Visual Arts Guild of Frisco members have been working on since April is splotches of dark yellowish brown paint traveling across the top half of the mural and ending down the side with paint drippings out onto the pavement in the parking lot.
Last Friday night someone made this addition to the artwork the VAGF is donating to the city.
VAGF artists and dozens of other volunteers have been working on painting the mural on the side of the building next to the gazebo on Main in old downtown Frisco.
The mural was designed to coordinate with the new landscaping the Frisco Garden Club plans to put in place.
“I want them to come back and I want them to clean it up,” said Diana Moya of the vandals. “If they want to be part of the project I’ll sit right here with my soda and sandwich and teach them to paint.”
VAGF and the Frisco Garden Club have a garden party planned for 6 p.m. July 14 to celebrate the completion of the mural. Moya said it’s likely the garden party will still happen even though there is no time to repair the damage to the mural by then.
By late afternoon Tuesday, she and three other artists who worked on the mural were discussing how they could incorporate the paint damage into the design of the mural.
Frisco Police Sgt. Gerald Meadors said, “We’re hoping that someone will come forward and help us. There is a shoe print and not a lot of evidence.”
He said that anyone with any knowledge of the crime can call the Frisco tip line. That number is 972-292-6090. Another number someone can call and leave information anonymously is the criminal investigation number 972-292-6200.

" This breaks my heart. What an absolutely beautiful mural. I've been painting public art since the late '60s and never has there been such cruel vandalism until the past few years. Someone, somewhere had better stand up to these people. In Los Angeles they have stopped the mural movement. They own the streets. I am so sorry this has happened to such a magnificent jewel. It shows the difference right now between those who build and create, the civilized who work hard and sacrifice for a better tomorrow, and those who sit back and blame and destroy. These people used to be called the barbarians.

" Why can't they just sandblast the wall? Or is the paint not washable? All outdoor murals should be done by durable paints. I use a great Italian colorwash that can be used to paint murals. It is sandblastable extremely durable. In Italy it's used in areas that have grafetti problems. http://fauxrealpainting.com
