DCTA donates 900 pounds of food to community
BY STEPHEN FASHORO, Staff Writer
The Denton County Transportation Authority collected and delivered more than 15 boxes of food for its first “Canned Food Ride” program last week.
DCTA collected the non-perishable food items from passengers on its Connect buses fixed routes in Lewisville and Denton.
During the donation process, passengers on the Connect buses were allowed to place their donations in boxes located in the buses. In return, passengers received a free one way ride towards their destination point. The items were collected during the week of July 23-28.
All the food collected was donated to Christian Community Action in Lewisville and the Denton Community Food Pantry.
“Last week, instead of collecting a fair on our DCTA Connect buses, we allowed our passengers to donate a canned good or non-perishable item. After talking with some of our social service agencies that we work with, they noted that they receive less food donations in the summer months so we thought we would hold an event that would encourage our riders to donate food,” Leggett said.
This was the first canned food drive held by the transportation authority.
“For being our first time, our riders showed a great level of generosity. They went above and beyond our expectations when we asked them to give back to the community. We delivered about 900 pounds of food,” Leggett said.
DCTA plans to continue its canned food drive in the future.
“This is something we plan to do every summer. We hope for greater participation next year, which would allow us to benefit more people and more organizations,” Leggett said. “It’s a great feeling to be a part of the Denton County Community and to be able to give back is an even greater feeling.”
