McKinney Police Department officials said an unidentified suspect tried to slash at Wal-Mart employees with a knife and led police on a car chase before he was arrested Monday in Allen.

McKinney police Capt. Randy Roland said the alleged attempted assault took place about 4:40 p.m. at the store located in the 5000 block of McKinney Ranch-Parkway. Officers took the suspect into custody about 20 minutes later.

Several days prior to the incident, the unidentified suspect was caught shoplifting from the same Wal-Mart store by security cameras but he eluded store officials before he could be apprehended. The suspect returned to the store Monday and a store manager and several store employees approached him, Roland said.

The suspect produced a knife and slashed it at the manager and the employees inside the store. Roland said the suspect did not injure anyone with the knife, but it allowed him to escape the store and flee the scene in a vehicle.

Store officials called police officials and gave them a description of the suspect and the vehicle. Officers in the area caught up with the vehicle, but the suspect did not pull over when prompted by police, so a short chase ensued.

Police chased the suspect’s vehicle into Allen, where he was taken into custody, Allen police Capt. Robert Flores said.

Roland said after police put the suspect in the back seat of a squad car, he continued to struggle with officers and kicked out a rear window, causing some minor cuts and scrapes to a McKinney police officer.

Collin County sheriff’s deputies were still booking the man into Collin County Detention Center, so his identity could not be released or confirmed by presstime.

Wal-Mart store officials could not be reached for comment.
