The McKinney Lions Club recognized McKinney Boyd High School seniors Maggie Polito and Robert Carpenter as its Students of the Month at its meeting on Wednesday.

These are the first Boyd students to be honored in the longtime Lions Club program, which recognizes high school seniors.

Polito is the daughter of Nancy and Chris Polito of McKinney. Polito’s teachers and friends describe her as a leader, ethical, self-directed and highly independent. She has the ability to be diverse and open-minded while striving to be worldly, according to a Lions news release. She possesses uncommon maturity and insight that give her the ability to push others toward continual improvement and a lofty achievement while making them feel special, the statement said.

Her scholastic honors include recognition on the A & B Honor Roll. Polito is very busy in many activities at McKinney Boyd High School. During the 2006-07 school year she was elected the vice president of the Boyd Future Farmers of America chapter. She participated at the FFA Green Hand Team Building Camp last spring and received the Star Green Hand Award for the entire McKinney ISD. Her FFA project last year was to raise a pig, which won her a third place award at the Collin County Livestock Show.

She is an active member of the varsity theater group, where she was the assistant stage manager for the first play at McKinney Boyd High School. Polito is on the technical staff of the joint McKinney ISD high schools production of “Beauty and the Beast,” which opened on Friday at McKinney North High School.

Polito is one of many core members of St. Gabriel Church Youth Group and is a Eucharistic Minister. This last summer she served as a middle school counselor for her church summer P.H.A.T. camp (People meet, Hangout with counselors, Adore God and Tour the Metroplex). Last spring, she participated in a mission ministry to Mississippi in support of hurricane relief, where the group worked on the outside of two homes. Polito works at an animal hospital, which is in line with one of her goals to become a veterinarian.

Polito’s hobbies include photography where she has won many awards. She placed first at the Philadelphia photo contest, second at the Antelloni College photo contest, and she placed eighth in a 20-country photography competition. Her other hobbies are floral design, horticulture, animal husbandry, swimming and running.

After graduation, she plans to attend college to get a degree in agriculture or veterinary medicine.

Carpenter is the son of Chris and Ruth Carpenter of McKinney. He has an older sister, Carrie, and a younger brother, Jeff.

His teachers, parents and friends describe him as being a leader by example. Carpenter led the inaugural young and inexperienced McKinney Boyd cross country team in 2006 that now has become a district, regional, and state competitor in 2007. Carpenter is a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church and earnestly desires his faith in a loving God to permeate all his endeavors, according to the news release.

He has been recognized for academic excellence and has received the Rotary Club Academic Excellence Award. He is a straight-A student and is in the top 2 percent of his senior class. Carpenter has been inducted into the National Honor Society and he has participated in Mock Trail, Whiz Quiz, Academic Decathlon and University Interscholastic League Ready Writing. His sophomore year, he participated in the McKinney Chamber of Commerce Youth Leadership Program and he serves as a peer mentor for college-bound AVID students.

Carpenter’s cross-country and track career spans two high schools. He spent his first two years of high school at McKinney North and completed at the state level with the 2005 cross country team. He was elected as team captain of the MNHS 2006 district champion track team. He has letter in cross-country and track at both McKinney North and McKinney Boyd High Schools. Last year, in addition to being team captain for both cross country and track at McKinney Boyd, he was a 4A regional qualifier in both sports.

Carpenter has dedicated his cross-country season to raising funds and increasing awareness about pancreatic cancer. He has his own Web site www.active.com/donate/pancreatisahouston/rcarpenter that establishes his goals and links to pancreatica.org, the homepage for the Lorenzen Cancer Foundation.

His hobbies include playing the piano and recreational sports. He is employed at Rick’s Chophouse as a banquet server.

Carpenter plans to attend college and major in economics and/or mathematics. He has not decided on a university: the University of Chicago, Southern Methodist University, Texas A&M, Northwestern, New York University and Valparaiso are being considered.
