Health drink linked to Plano student illness

Published: Tuesday, September 18, 2007 10:27 PM CDT
The Plano health department was testing the ingredients of a popular health drink Tuesday — served in the Shepton High School cafeteria — to determine if it played a part in a student’s illness a week ago.

“We are testing the Vitamin Water,” said Tomeji Miller, a spokesperson for the city’s health department. “We are testing the product just to see what the ingredients are. We want to verify what is on the label is what is in the product.”

Miller declined to comment on the substance they are testing for, which may have caused the illness.

It is unclear whether authorities believe the student become ill during an isolated incident involving tampering or as a part of a much larger problem with the product.

Nina Fiddian-Green, a spokesperson for Vitamin Water, said they have not received any complaints about their products from the Plano area or the Plano Independent School District.

“We take these issues very seriously,” Fiddian-Green said. “We have no records of a consumer complaint from (the Plano) area. If there is an issue then the person needs to come forward and speak with us.”

Police received a report of “suspicious circumstances” surrounding the illness of a student at Shepton High School on Sept. 10.

Det. Jerry Minton, a spokesperson for the Plano Police Department, said police are investigating the report to determine if any criminal activity was involved, but declined to comment further citing the department’s policy not to discuss cases involving juveniles.

Parents of students at the school were sent a letter regarding campus safety Monday. In the letter Principal Burton Smith states:

“The Plano ISD Food and Nutritional Services (FANS) Department has voluntarily removed all items from the Shepton food service line that are susceptible to possible tampering.  As a

result, some students during the last scheduled lunch service today had to make alternative choices for drink selection.”

Nancy Long, a spokesperson for the Plano Independent School District, declined to comment citing the ongoing police investigation.

“We are really offering no comment at this time,” Long said. “There is a police investigation under way. While this is ongoing I cannot elaborate on any information.”

Shepton High School Principal Burton Smith was unavailable for comment as of press time.
