McKinney's Eddins Elementary named Blue Ribbon School

Published: Wednesday, October 3, 2007 1:07 PM CDT
C.T. Eddins Elementary School in the McKinney ISD was recognized this week as a 2007 No Child Left Behind -- Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education.

Only 23 schools in Texas and four schools in Collin County were selected. A total of 287 schools nationwide were selected as 2007 No Child Left Behind -- Blue Ribbon Schools.

This is the first time that Eddins Elementary School has been selected as a No Child Left Behind -- Blue Ribbon School. The school joins Glen Oaks Elementary and Wolford elementary schools, both of which were selected as Blue Ribbon Schools in 2006, and Valley Creek Elementary, which was selected as a Blue Ribbon School in 2003.

"We are all extremely proud of the entire C.T. Eddins community. This award reflects the hard work and dedication of teachers, administrators and students," said McKinney ISD Superintendent Tom Crowe. "It also reflects the support of the parents and patrons of C.T. Eddins Elementary School. I congratulate principal Melanie Raleeh and everyone involved with C.T. Eddins as they join our other three schools which have been named as Blue Ribbons Schools previously."

A total of 413 schools nationwide can be nominated. This number is determined based on how many schools and students reside in each state, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. The Chief State School Officer (CSSO) nominates public schools, and the Council for American Private Education (CAPE) submits private schools nominations. The schools are invited by U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings to submit an application for possible recognition as a No Child Left Behind - Blue Ribbon School.

No Child Left Behind -- Blue Ribbon schools are selected on one of two criteria: Schools with at least 40 percent of their students from disadvantaged backgrounds that dramatically improve student performance to high levels on state tests; and/or schools whose students, regardless of background, achieve in the top 10 percent of their state on state tests.

The award is given to public and private schools for helping close the achievement gap and for students who achieve at very high levels. Under No Child Left Behind, schools must make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), in reading and language arts and mathematics.

"It is a pleasure to join in congratulating Mrs. Raleeh and the entire team at Eddins Elementary School," said Chris Brunner, senior director of elementary education for McKinney ISD. "Eddins has a rich tradition of being a MISD leader in not only academics but in providing a well rounded environment of excellence which addresses the needs of the whole child. The Eddins ‘family' consisting of teachers, staff, parents and certainly the students, should be very proud of this tremendous accomplishment."

C.T. Eddins Elementary opened in 1998 and was rated an Exemplary School by the Texas Education Agency in 2007.

"It is such an incredible honor for Eddins Elementary to be named a Blue Ribbon School," Raleeh said. "This year marks our 10th year anniversary here at Eddins and our motto this year is ‘Celebrating a Decade of Excellence'. The Blue Ribbon recognition exemplifies the efforts of all of the students, staff and parents who have dedicated themselves to working hard and to achieving excellence not just last year, but for every year since we first opened our doors to students."

Raleeh will travel to Washington for the 2007 No Child Left Behind - Blue Ribbon School awards ceremony on Nov. 12 and 13.
