Pet store closes, leaves some animals behind

Published: Wednesday, February 6, 2008 4:56 PM CST
Several animals died in a local pet store after its owners reportedly left them behind. Pet Tails pet store at 4750 S. Colony Blvd had a notice posted on its front door that the locks had been changed due to failure to pay rent.

The lights are out and the phone has been disconnected as well.

“When we got there to change the locks we found the owners had not been in the building in at least a week,” said Amanda Eller with Crest Commercial Real Estate, the property manager. “According to the electric company the power had been off for over a week. I was the one that called animal control since there were still animals in the store.”

We went there and found fish, hamsters, snakes, and crabs still in the store,” said Patricia Barrington, division manager of The Colony Animal Control office. “Some of the snakes and hamsters had died because there was no electricity for heat, and no food or water”.

The snake, a ball python was given to the Plano Living Materials Center, a Plano ISD facility dedicated to science education for students within the school district. The snake will be given a good home there and used to educate students on the life cycle of snakes and wild animals.

"We were able to find homes for all the animals from the pet store,” Barrington said. The animal control office does not have the facilities for maintaining the type of animals found in the store.

According to The Colony Chamber of Commerce the store opened in July of 2007 with two partners in the company. They joined the chamber the same week they opened. One partner left the company after two months of operations.

"We are sad to hear that they did not make it,” said Allison Mihavics, executive director, of the Chamber of Commerce. “I remember going to the opening, and I would stop by there often to see how things were going”

Several animal pens, aquariums, and other pieces of furniture remain in the store. “We are holding the contents of the building in lieu of payment to the landlord,” Eller said. “They will probably be sold or given to an animal shelter or animal control center”

A request for comment was sent to store owner Chris Peacock, but no reply has been received as of press time.

" that is really mean. Leaving animals behind in the dark is even more abusive. No food. "
