With the eyes of Plano Senior and Allen hanging over their shoulders, Plano East and Plano West decided to test the limitations of the Wolves scoreboard by combining for 30 runs.
West ultimately came out the victor in the 19-11 District 9-5A matchup, but both sides put up some impressive numbers.
“I don’t think anybody expected we would come out and put 30 runs on the board,” said Kale Kiser, West senior. “But then again nobody expected we would combine for nine errors and have a sloppy defensive game. At the plate though, we’ve been doing that all year. We just saw the ball really well tonight.”
Kiser batted 5-for-5 with three doubles, a triple and a single and three RBI on the night driving everything he saw into right centerfield.
West sophomore first baseman Ryan Ford added two homeruns and five RBI, twice driving in senior Jason Coates who went 3-for-4 on the night.
On the other side, East benefitted from a solid night from leadoff hitter junior Tyler Wylie, who only went 2-for-2, but also walked three times and drove in a run during the Panthers three-run sixth inning.
That coupled with a three-run homerun from junior Logan Reneau, gave the Panthers a silver lining coming out of the loss.
“We scored knew coming into this game they were going to hit the ball and hit it hard,” said Travis Collins, East head coach. “We hit the ball hard too. We could have given up after the first inning though, but our guys kept battling back and kept their heads in the game and I am proud of them for that.”
After senior Jeff Emens drove in Wylie in the top of the first half, the Wolves quickly posted six runs in the bottom of the frame, with senior Ryan Hughes driving in two runs to cap the inning.
East was held scoreless in the second, but West’s Coates hit a high fly-ball which was called a homerun, and gave the Wolves an 8-1 advantage.
East came back in the top of the third, scoring four runs with Reneau’s homerun over the left field fence.
West however, added two more, maintaining a 10-6 lead heading into the fifth.
There, West proceeded to slug the ball. After Kiser was hit in the foot, but did not receive the call, he promptly popped a shot to the center field fence driving in junior Donald Plant.
Three batters later, Ford put a bomb over the right field fence and the Wolves took a 15-7 lead.
“Here we put up five runs in the fifth inning and we’re thinking we can relax a little bit,” said Kendall Clark, West head coach. “But they just kept coming back at us. Fortunately our hitting and base running was working for us tonight so our pitchers didn’t feel like they had to throw up a goose-egg.”
East added three more runs in the sixth and one in the top of the seventh, but West’s four runs in the bottom of the sixth combined with another homerun from Ford proved too much for the Panthers to handle.
With the win, West stays tied atop the district with Allen while East is 1-1 with three other teams early in district play.
West hosts Flower Mound Marcus Saturday at 12 p.m., while East plays their next game Monday, March 17 against Richardson.
