R.L. Turner’s baseball team lost its first two opening district games, scoring just one run each in games against Flower Mound Marcus and Coppell.

The Lions led Friday against Coppell, 1-0, after five innings. But, the Cowboys scored once in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game.

Then, in the bottom of the seventh, Cowboy Austin Elkins broke the tie game with a walk-off three-run homer.

The team scored once on March 11, in an 11-1 loss against Marcus.

Marcus’ Danny Jasinski tossed a complete game, striking out seven batters.

Softball team still searching for district wins

The Lady Lions softball team is still in search of their first district win after losing a close contest March 11 against Carrollton Creekview.

Coach J.C. Hamlin said Kathleen Stone had a great start for Turner. She added the team played well defensively, committing just one error.

Stone said Priscilla Quintanilla and Amanda Briseno turned a double play, while Taylor Evans and Katie Mitcham both had “top notch” catches in the outfield.

Sam League scored the lone run for the Lady Lions.

The team followed with a loss Wednesday against Coppell, 10-0.

Stone said the team made solid contact at the plate, but ran into a Cowgirls team that played solid defense.

Jessica Salazar entered the game for relief in the second inning to slow Coppell’s offense down.

The game was scheduled to be played March 10 but was cancelled because of weather.

The team also lost Friday against Flower Mound, 16-0.

Quintanilla led the offense with a second-inning double into the right field corner, but the Lady Jaguars were too powerful at the plate, finding the gaps on numerous occasions.

Turner’s varsity game scheduled for Tuesday against Lewisville was cancelled and will be played today at 6 p.m.

Soccer team looking to close season with win streak

After going six straight games without a win, the Lions soccer team returned injured defensemen and got back in the win column, defeating Lewisville March 11, 2-1.

The team followed the win Friday by tying Newman Smith, 1-1.

“We started off the season well, but injuries to our back line and defense really hurt us,” said R.L. Turner coach Marshall Huston. “I wouldn’t say we are really playing any better, we just have everyone back.”

The team trailed Lewisville, 1-0, but rallied to tie the game by halftime on a goal by Victor Avelar. Edwin Rodriguez scored in the second half to give the Lions the win.

Turner also had to come from behind against Newman Smith. The Trojans struck first, but Avelar scored for the Lions to tie the game.

Lady Lions lose against Lewisville

Lewisville’s girls soccer team won against R.L. Turner for the second time this season on Tuesday, 2-0.

“It was senior night for Lewisville, and they showed up ready to play,” said Turner coach Tiffany Orshalick. “I think they wanted it a little more than we did, but it was pretty evenly matched game.”

The team also lost Friday night, 2-0, against Newman Smith. Orshalick thought the Lady Lions dominated the game but were not able to convert on their opportunities.

“It seems like we had about 30 shots on goal and we hit several posts,” Orshalick said.

The game was officiated by two referees, one less than the usual three.

“It completely changes the dynamic of the game,” Orshalick said. “It makes it tougher to call penalties and offside, and they miss a lot.”
