Davis selected for Olympic training team
By Jesse Williams, Staff Writer
Chelsea Davis, 15, of Texas Dreams Gymnastics is back in the Everybody Fits’ gym in Coppell perfecting her routine so she can win a spot on the 2008 U.S. Women’s Olympic Gymnastics Team.
The final selection of the Olympic team takes place from July 16 to 20 at The Olympic Selection Camp at the Women’s National Team Training Center in Huntsville. Davis was one of 12 girls selected to train for the 2008 Women’s Gymnastics Olympic Team Trials.
There are only six positions and three alternates for the women’s gymnastics team. Davis is one of 12 women to attend the selection camp. However, two women have already been picked for the Olympic team: Shawn Johnson came in first place and Nastia Liukin of Plano, came in second place in the all-around at the trials. Davis will have to compete against nine other women for the remaining four positions.
“I just tried to relax and have fun,” Davis said. “The crowd was amazing. When the crowd started chanting U.S.A., it was awesome. It was too cool for words.”
Davis and her mother moved from Lakeway, near Austin, to Lewisville to train with Texas Dreams Gymnastics at Everybody Fits. There, she trains about 40 hours a week. Kim Zmeskal Burdette, the first American gymnast to win the all-around gold medal at the World Gymnastics Championship and her husband, Chris Burdette, coach Davis.
If selected for the Olympic Team, Davis, with her five other team members, will attend the 2008 Olympics which takes place from Aug. 8 to 24 in Beijing, China.
