Two Carrollton residents died and another was critically injured Friday morning after their vehicle rolled over while attempting to pass a truck on State Highway 87 near Hartley, a small town in the Texas panhandle.
The Texas Department of Public Safety said David Allen MacDonald, 42, and Laurenne Krystean Hall, 18, died at the scene. Another passenger, Kristina Jeanne MacDonald, 37, also of Carrollton, was airlifted to Northwest Texas Hospital in Amarillo with critical injuries as of Friday, according to the DPS.
Mr. MacDonald, driving a Chevrolet Tahoe, was attempting to pass a Mac tractor-trailer on the left just as the tractor-trailer was making a legal left turn. The Tahoe began rolling when Mr. MacDonald took evasive action to avoid hitting the tractor-trailer. The tractor-trailer was not hit by the Tahoe, DPS said.
Mr. MacDonald and Ms. Hall were taken to Horizon Funeral Home in Dalhart.
Ms. Hall was a 2008 graduate of Hebron High School. Principal’s secretary Cindy Crouch said Hall graduated mid-term, finishing her classes in January, but still crossed the stage in June.
Mr. MacDonald was an attorney at McTaggart & Associates in Dallas. According to the company Web site, Mr. MacDonald practiced in the areas of general civil litigation, business and commercial litigation, banking litigation, real estate litigation with an emphasis on lease disputes, bankruptcy and general business and corporate law.
“He was a great guy. He was a very good lawyer. David was well-respected by his peers,” said Robert McTaggart, president of McTaggart & Associates. “He obtained the highest rating that is given to lawyers by Martindale Hubbell. That’s the most widely published lawyer directory and they rate lawyers. David obtained the highest rating in competence, integrity and ethics.”
McTaggart said Mr. MacDonald was an active member of the Apartment Association of Greater Dallas and was often asked to teach and lecture on various legal issues. He said Ms. Hall, who went by Krystean, was Mr. MacDonald’s stepdaughter.
“They were on their way to Colorado as a trip to congratulate Krystean before she started her first year of college at Texas Tech,” he said.
