Rowlett’s Wet Zone water park scores high for safety

Published: Monday, August 11, 2008 5:22 PM CDT
Wet Zone, Rowlett’s family water park, is also one of the safest places to play, according to the National Aquatic Safety Company ((NASCO), an independent organization that provides safety inspections for aquatic facilities.

The Wet Zone received an index score of 94 from NASCO for July, city officials announced.

This score exceeds the June score of 81, along with the park’s previous record of 93.5 in 2007.

A score of 70 or higher is rated “world class. scores above a 90 are rarely given by NAS CO auditors, city officials said.

“This kind of attention to safety allows our guests to have an enjoyable experience,” said Tony Bates, Wet Zone manager. “We keep that at the top of our priorities, every minute of every day that we are open.”

NASCO conducts indexes and safety checks on amusement park and swimming pool staffs throughout the world. At water parks, these indexes include examining the appearance and behavior of the lifeguards to determine the overall safety of the guests in the park.

Bates attributes the park’s success to the requirement that all Wet Zone lifeguards receive a NASCO lifeguard certification along with extensive training by the park’s supervising staff before being put on stand to watch over guests.

In addition, all Wet Zone lifeguards are required to attend weekly in-service training, pass two skills audits per month and retake the certification examinations halfway through the summer.

The training focuses on lifesaving skills such as water rescues, CPR and the Heimlich maneuver.

However, the Wet Zone attributes its high safety standards to its emphasis on preventative guarding, which includes quality scanning by the lifeguards and proactive supervisors on the pool deck who prevent accidents and react quickly to any sign of trouble.

Before training and supervising the Wet Zone lifeguards, every member of the park’s supervising staff undergoes four days of training at NASCO’s annual safety school in Austin.

The Wet Zone will be open until Aug. 24, and then weekends until Sept 1, with a special doggie swim day on Sept 20.

Admission for Rowlett residents is $7 for children and $8 for adults. Non-residents admission is $9 for children and $10 for adults.
