30,000 expected for HV balloon, music festival

A crowd of about 30,000 people is expected for the 21st Annual Highland Village Balloon and Music Festival this weekend at Copperas Branch Park.
The crowd will come to watch at least 16 balloons glow Friday night and go into flight on Saturday and Sunday. Radio Disney will sponsor music groups on two stages and children will enjoy a bounce house and small carnival rides. Arts and crafts vendors will set up for the weekend event, which will kick off at 5 p.m. Friday. Music will begin about 6 p.m.
A major attraction Friday night will be the balloon glow. The balloons will take to the air Saturday morning following a pancake breakfast and will be visible over Lewisville Lake and other areas around the lake. Balloonists will compete on hitting targets Sunday morning.
The event is the major fundraiser for the Highland Village Lions Club, which sponsors two Boy Scout troops, a Cub Scout pack and an Adventuring Crew. The Lions also sponsor a program for people with sight needs. The Lions provide glasses for school children who need them but can’t afford them, and also provide dogs for the sightless.
“We didn’t have the event last year because the park was flooded,” said Van Glover, Highland Village Lions Club president and festival chairman. “That really hurt us financially. We are hoping this year’s event will be more successful than ever.”
He said, unlike in the past, this year three major Dallas radio stations have been promoting the event.
He said Lions Clubs from Lewisville, Denton, The Colony and Lake Cities are also participating in this year’s event.
Admission to the event is free. However, Boy Scouts will help park vehicles and a donation of $5 per vehicle is requested.
Glover said one of the most popular attractions at the event this year, other than the balloons and the music groups, will be the dunking booth.
“The head coaches of the three high schools [Lewisville, Marcus and Flower Mound] have volunteered to be the targets,” he said. “We expect there will be long lines.”
