MCA enrollment increases
By Jim Kilpatrick, McKinney Courier-Gazette
McKinney Christian Academy continues to grow despite the economic downturn.
“We are at 475 students this year. We are up in all areas,” MCA registrar Taryn Nejtek said. “Last year we had 434 students.”
She added that they were very pleased with the enrollment.
The growth MCA is seeing has been in all levels, she said.
“We saw an influx of sixth grade applicants this year,” Nejtek said.
According to Nejtek many parents said they were seeking a Christian private school education rather than the larger middle schools of public education.
“The large junior highs were a bite scary to them,” she said.
The upper school principal Keith Bollinger sees steady growth for MCA
“We started with 99 high school students last year,” Bollinger said. “We have had a minimal amount of growth to 115 with a couple more in the pipeline that could possible be here.”
He said he thinks the growth is due to fact the school had a very successful positive year in 2007-2008.
“I think there are a lot of people that are excited about the new facility being built (the student life center),” Bollinger said. “It is going to help our reputation.”
The high school curriculum has added more classes focusing on college preparatory.
“We have added more AP classes,” he said. “We now have AP chemistry, AP government.”
With the addition of these courses the school now offers 21 hours of AP credit.
“This is a big step towards prep school mentality of helping students that can and have the ability to start earlier on their college material,” Bollinger said.
Bollinger said there is enough space in the high school to grow to 180 students.
“We have spaces we could fill in all four grades in the high school and junior high grades,” Bollinger said. “Our sixth grade is closed but we are open in seventh and eighth grades.”
MCA is a Christian, interdenominational, college preparatory, coeducational, independent, non-profit Pre Kindergarten through grade 12 school. It is the only one of its kind in McKinney and draws students from numerous North Texas communities. The school was established in 1992 with an enrollment of 13.
