ANNA -- Amy Sarty said she is afraid to stay in her own home after a strange man tried to break in and shoot her husband Monday night.

"I checked the doors twice before I went to bed, made sure the cars were locked, made sure the garage doors were locked and took a baseball bat up with me when I went to bed," she said. "I'm just trying to feel safe."

She spotted an unidentified man in her home in the 2100 block of Penton Linns Drive sometime after midnight Monday. Her husband, Brian, chased after the man -- who fired several shots at him before the two started struggling and the suspect broke free and escaped.

Amy Sarty said the nightmare began just as she was about to go to bed. She noticed a shadow moving through an open garage door. As she peered into the garage, the shadow moved quickly as if running. She ran back into the house and told her husband who immediately dashed out the front door to chase after the shadowy figure without putting his shoes on.

Brian Sarty said he could hear a neighbor's dogs barking. He went over to investigate and was met with the muzzle flash of a handgun, Anna Police Chief Kenny Jenks said.

That's also when Amy Sarty heard what sounded like gunshots, she said.

"He started yelling and I heard two shots being fired," she said. "I saw him and thought it was just a cap gun. [Brian] even ran after him yelling at him to come back with that fake gun."

Amy Sarty ran back into her home and dialed 911. Several other neighbors also heard the shots and called the police. Amy Sarty said her husband caught up with the suspect and "got him in a headlock" at the corner of Niagara Falls and Stanley Falls Drive. The suspect managed to escape by biting Brian Sarty on the side of his face.

The suspect then pointed the handgun at Brian Sarty and told him to go away. Brian Sarty refused to move, the suspect struck him in the head with his weapon, darted into a Ford Explorer and drove away. The sound of screeching tires followed him out of the neighborhood, Amy Sarty said.

Paramedics took Brian Sarty to Presbyterian Hospital of Allen. None of the shots fired hit him or any nearby bystanders, and he was treated and released the same day, Jenks said.

Amy Sarty said they didn't realize the gun the suspect had was real until police officers told them they found two bullet holes in a neighbor's home.

"I'm glad my husband is OK," she said, "but we didn't realize it was a gun."

Investigators are looking for the truck the suspect jumped into after his struggle with Brian Sarty in the hopes it will lead them to the suspect. The vehicle is a dark green 1990's Ford Explorer with an unknown Texas tag and license plate. The color on the hood of the truck has faded. Jenks said several nearby residents reported seeing the vehicle in the neighborhood before the incident.

The suspect is described as a black male in his 20's who is approximately 6 to 6 feet, 2 inches tall and weighs approximately 210 to 220 pounds. He was seen fleeing the neighborhood in a blue shirt. He may also have some facial injuries sustained during the struggle, according to a released statement.

Citizens with any information on a suspect fitting this description are asked not to approach or confront the suspect since he is considered armed and dangerous. They should instead call 911, the Anna Police Department at (972) 924-2848 or (972) 547-5350 or the Collin County Sheriff's Office at (972) 542-5100.
