GARLAND n Brandon Lowery says he’s not even this good on Madden.

“This felt like Madden to me, though,” Lowery said.

The junior hauled in five touchdown passes and compiled 286 yards as Sachse defeated McKinney, 47-35, Friday in a non-district football game at Williams Stadium in Garland.

Sachse (2-0) responded from a two-score deficit to rally past McKinney (0-1) in the Lions’ season opener.

Sachse compiled 516 yards and turned in big play after big play that McKinney was able to match at times, but not contain.

“We played pitiful defensively,” said McKinney coach Bobby Reyes. “We didn’t do anything like we’ve been doing.”

Sachse scored four touchdowns in the second quarter, including two inside the final 1:21, to take a 27-21 halftime lead.

Henry Hunter, who was held out of the first quarter, combined with Brandon Lowery on three touchdown passes in the second quarter. Lowery finished the first half with 151 yards on seven receptions and 175 total yards n six yards fewer than McKinney amassed in the first half.

“I know there’s a better defensive team than this out there for us,” Reyes said. “We can’t give up 47 points and hope to win.”

But, the Lions did put 35 points on the board, enough to win most games.

“That should be enough,” Reyes said. “But it is not enough when you play bad defense.”

After an explosive second quarter, Sachse came back to score once in the third quarter and two more times in the fourth quarter. Lowery had two touchdown receptions in the second half.

“I really don’t know what it was,” Lowery said. “I guess I just got in my zone. I didn’t drop a single pass.”

And he caught 12 for 220 yards.

Hunter came in after the first quarter and after a 4-yard run, the junior hit Lowery in stride for a 36-yard touchdown strike to result in the 27-21 halftime lead. A little more than a minute earlier Hunter found Lowery on a 12-yard strike to tie the game at 21-21.

Hunter rallied Sachse back from an early two-score deficit with his first strike to Lowery on a swing pass that went 39 yards down the right sideline, but before he found Lowery the pass was nearly intercepted and had it been it would surely have been clear sailing for the McKinney defender.

Before being lifted for Hunter, Vincent Beltran hit a pass and relied upon Weathers and Joshua Jackson on a 13-play, 60-yard drive culminating in a 1-yard LaChristian Shepherd touchdown run.

In the second quarter, the teams combined to light up the scoreboard for 34 points.

McKinney posted a 14-0 lead with 7:12 elapsed in the game as Dario Jackson collected a 17-yard fade pass over his shoulder in the corner of the end zone for 7-0 lead with 7:57 remaining in the first quarter. A little more than three minutes later Brett Heldt sprinted through a gaping hole on a midline dive and went untouched 27 yards into the end zone.

Heldt and Will Rogers scored touchdowns for McKinney in the second half, but by the time Rogers reached the end zone it was too late for a rally against Sachse. Dario Jackson scored two of the first three touchdowns for McKinney and his second gave McKinney its final lead of the game with 3:29 remaining in the first half.
