The Garland ISD Tournament did not end quite the way Rowlett wanted it to, but the Eagles showed off their potential during an impressive run to advance to the championship game.
Rowlett had found itself in a dogfight in the semifinals against an upstart John Paul team that was coming off solid victories over Mesquite and Richardson.
After taking game one, the second game was tightly-contested, with the teams deadlocked at 17-17.
The Eagles got kills from Keely Howk and Heather Rigby, but John Paul kept pace with a par of kills of their own to keep it even at 19-19.
That is when sophomore middle blocker Lauren Hawkins took over at the net. Hawkins registered four kills and two blocks down the stretch, and her final kill on match point gave Rowlett a 25-23 victory and a trip to the title game.
That win marked the sixth straight for the Eagles at the tournament. In pool play, Rowlett earned two-game sweeps of Lindale and Ferris and then outlasted a scrappy North Mesquite team in three games to earn the top seed and a spot in the championship bracket.
The Eagles started bracket play on Saturday with a victory over Mabank and then took down Canyon Creek to set up the meeting with John Paul.
