Mesquite: Year Round Water Conservation begins in January
By Lynn Proctor Windle, Managing Editor
Beginning in January, the city of Mesquite will implement several year-round water conservation measures that will govern water usage even if there is no official drought. These changes are part of the city’s water conservation and drought contingency plan.
The three major changes begin with car washing. Anyone who washes his or her car in Mesquite must use a water control nozzle so that the water flow can be shut off when it’s not being used to rinse off the vehicle.
Residents and property owners and managers who have an irrigation system must make sure that the system works properly at all times. According to the city, a malfunctioning irrigation system includes a system where sprinkler heads are broken, lines are broken or any other system damage that results in water waste.
According to the city, fines could reach up to $2,000 or the water customer could lose his or her water service or both.
However, Greg Sowell, city spokesman, noted that “either of those alternatives would only be enacted in extreme cases of negligence or defiance of the ordinance.”
In the meantime, the city will begin a public outreach program to educate citizens about the coming changes.
In a written statement, the city noted that “Mesquite's water conservation ordinance falls in line with new state legislation which requires cities with a population of at least 20,000 o license installers of irrigation systems. It also requires a city to regulate the design, installation, and operation of irrigation systems.”

" Amen to that- it gives the weed measurers something else to harrass citizens about! They can't atch the guy who stole my lawn mower but they can measure my weeds while I save up to buy another one! "

" Last year we outlawed celebrating our nation's birth with common fireworks. Then it was decided that you can't buy a particular beverage that is totally legal under the constitution. Now I have to be careful what kind of nozzle to put on my garden hose. Give me the Republic of Texas please - not the commisar of Mesquite! And to e's point - if a functioning, timed sprinkler system malfunctions do we pay the $2,000 now and does the city take MasterCard? Sometimes an ounce of prevention sounds like the pound of cure. "

" Who do we report the city of Mesquite to? The city will water at 2 :00 pm on the hottest day of the year. "

" This newest water conservation measure appears to be driven by the State and the city is just trying to get on board, however the city of Mesquite needs a mayor and city council that are more intuned with the average citizen, people that have not forgotten where they came from or how it is in the working world with bills and kids and such. Vote for someone like myself that was born & raised right here in Mesqute, when this was just a Rodeo town. "

" Mesquite needs to work on the crime in the city. Drugs are in every neighborhood and it is a serious problem. I finally moved out of Mesquite after living there for over 30 years. Our neighborhood drug dealers finally ran me off. "

" I am selling my house and acreage after living here for over 30 years. Mesquite is a joke. They voted NO to having the Dart lines come thru Mesquite. We are surrounded by "wet" cities, and yet Mesquite is dry (how stupid is that). Yes, we need more home grown people citizens to serve Mesquite that care about the plain folks. I once confronted a city worker that was sleeping on the job and I was threatened to shut up or he would cut off my services. Yeah, I'm ready to leave. "

" I am new to Mesquite and sorry I moved here. There is no bus system, my daughter's aparatment has been robbed twice in a month and the police say she is lying. What a joke. What do we pay them for to pick on us and let the robbers proceed with business as usual? I thought Texas was a state of the union not a people's republic. My four year old son cannot go to preschool because he is required by law to take a nap even if it is emotionally abusive to him. How come the state can mandate abuse to my child? Worried now I might be on the city's hit list for stating my opinion. "
