Plano: Police join forces to protect citizens from internet fraud
By Stephanie Flemmons, Staff Writer
Plano Police reached out Saturday to spread the word about the fastest-growing crime in the nation.
The North Texas Crime Prevention Association, Plano Police Department and more than 25 law enforcement and government agencies organized a “SCAM JAM” event to educate the community about crime prevention, most notably Internet safety.
Some of the topics discussed included protecting children from sexual predators, Internet safety, identity theft, mortgage fraud and healthcare fraud.
“It can touch anybody,” Snider said. “It has touched people who may not know it. Internet safety is a big deal.”
Snider said Internet fraud occurs in Plano and he was happy to bring the annual seminar to the city.
“I am contacted almost every day by someone who has been affected by identity theft. Since I’m president of the association we have been very involved in Plano,” Snider said. “Our goal is to provide our citizens with the most up-to-date training to help them from becoming a victim of identity theft. We want to help every way we can for our citizens.”
Keynote speakers included U.S. Congressmen Sam Johnson and Ralph Hall.
Representatives from the FBI, U.S. Postal Service, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Social Security Administration, Federal Trade Commission, The Attorney General’s Office and more spoke at the event.

" There is a safe social and educational network for kids ages 5-18 that requires a child's school to verify his or her identification before they can become a member. This is how they keep out predators, imposter profiles and cyber bullying. I know my son is safe on this site. He can still play games, IM, chat, create his own webpage, and receive homework help if he needs it. The site for parents is www.safewave.org and the site for children is www.iland5.com. Both sites are free to use. "
