Wii is a strike with seniors

Published: Wednesday, November 26, 2008 1:59 PM CST
Video games aren’t just popular among kids anymore. The average “gamer” is age 35, but that only tells half the story.

Seniors at Watermere in Southlake can often be found playing Wii bowling. The game has become quite popular at the center and the Wii bowling league, a throwback to the era of league night at your local bowling alley, meets twice a week, with 10-15 seniors showing up for each game.

“The Wii works well with every age,” said community life director Amy Pearce. “I think this still allows them to be competitive and is easy enough.”

According to Pearce, they have had the Wii pretty much since the center opened in March and started out with bowling only one day a week. Because of interest the program was increased to twice a week and have also started playing golf.

“It’s a challenge and I think we need to be challenged from time to time,” said Wii player Laura Cruce.

“These four right here are my challenge,” Cruce said, pointing to the women sitting next to her.

Cruce plays every time Watermere has a Wii day and even helps pick out a character. Some of the residents have even created Mii, which are custom Wii characters.

“I enjoy the activity, and its good exercise,” said Alice Howard, another Wii player. “It gets you up and about and I like the social aspect of it.”

Howard got her all-time high score of 143 last weekend. She has lived at Watermere since October and has been playing since she moved in.

“The best part about this is it is more active,” Howard said. “I love the competition.”

Howard said the players cheer for each other when there is a strike and everyone is very supportive of each other.

Pearce explained that it was a good activity to bring to the center because everyone can play, even those with walkers and wheelchairs.

“It wasn’t hard for me to learn to do it (play Wii). I am just not very good at it,” Blanch said.

Pearce started out with just bowling and has now started introducing golf and also bought the attachments for the remote to make the sports seem more real.

“After the new year I am going to try some new Wii games,” said Pearce. “I’ll try anything twice and if it bombs I give up.”

Pearce hopes to find something after the new year that will further challenge those that have discovered their new love of the game and a little friendly competition.
