Frisco ranked as 16th safest city in U.S.
By Ann Marie Shambaugh and Danny Gallagher, Staff Writers
Frisco residents have good reason to feel safe this holiday season. A national crime ranking recently released names Frisco as the second safest city in Texas and the 16th safest city in the country.
CQ Press conducted a study of crime statistics of the 385 cities with populations of 75,000 people or more. Frisco wasn’t the only Collin County city ranked on the list. Allen ranked as the safest city in the state and ninth in the country, Plano ranked third in the state and 51st in the nation, McKinney placed fourth in the state and 60th nationwide, and Lewisville fifth in the state and 62nd in the nation, according to the report.
Frisco Police Department spokesman Sgt. Gerald Meadors said that Frisco’s ranking reflects well on several crime-prevention efforts in the community, both from residents and the police department.
CQ Press created the list from crime statistics compiled by the FBI. The report ranks each city by measuring the number of murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary and motor vehicle theft reports and assigns each a rank with a composite score. They are then compared to the FBI’s national crime statistics.
Meadors said that Frisco would not have ranked so high if not for residents who care about safety in the community and take proactive measures to prevent crime.
“I think the citizen involvement ranks very high, because without the citizen involvement it makes it very difficult to do our job,” Meadors said.
