Council to prepare for May 9 elections
BY DAN EAKIN, Staff Writer
The Lewisville City Council will act on several agenda items when it meets at 7 p.m. Monday, to prepare for the May 9 election.
In addition to the regular election to fill the expiring terms of Mayor Gene Carey and Place 2 Councilman David Thornhill, the council is also expected to call a special election to take place at the same time as the regular election to fill the Place 4 position.
Place 4 Councilman Dean Ueckert is seeking to be elected mayor. This means someone will have to be elected to fill the Place 4 seat he will vacate, because he filed for mayor rather than for re-election to Place 4.
As of Friday afternoon, no one had filed to run against Ueckert for mayor or against Thornhill for Place 2 on the city council. Also, no one had filed for the Place 4 position.
Ueckert and Thornhill filed with the city secretary last Saturday, which was the first day to file, and filing continues through March 9.
Also Monday night, the council will vote to designate polling places in the May 9 elections.
The council will also consider resolutions authorizing a joint agreement between the city of Lewisville and the Lewisville Independent School District for a joint election on May 9, and the rental of voting machines and equipment from Denton County for the elections.
In other action Monday night, the council will consider approval of a professional services agreement with Design Workshop Inc., in the amount of $232,000 for services related to the development of urban design plans for Old Town Plaza, Old Town Transit Oriented Development and the Mill Street corridor streetscape.
The item was tabled from the last meeting so staff could work with the consultant to reduce the contract amount by 10 percent.
A comprehensive scope of services is proposed to create an urban design plan for a larger downtown area, and engage all stakeholders in the process.
Also, Monday night, the council will consider a request from Sculptureworks Inc., of Hurst, to display an 18-foot high sculpture in front of Lewisville City Hall.
The bronze art work, known as “Slicker Shy,” is a casting of a bucking horse and rider.
Steve Bacchus, assistant city manager, said Sculptureworks is offering to display the sculpture in front of city hall at no cost to the city. The sculpture is valued at $450,000.
Bacchus said, if the council approves the request, the sculpture may be set up in front of city hall within a month or so.
Sculptureworks has several smaller art exhibits on consignment at the Lewisville Library.
