The deadline for filing as a candidate in the May 9 special election for Place 4 is this coming Tuesday, March 3. The deadline for filing as a candidate in the regular election is Monday, March 9.

Dean Ueckert, who has served in Place 4 on the Lewisville City Council for the past several years, is seeking to be elected mayor rather than seeking re-election to the Place 4 position.

In addition to Ueckert, Brandon Bertrand and Winston Edmondson Jr. have also filed as candidates for mayor in the March 9 regular election.

Bertrand, 24, a 2001 graduate of Lewisville High School, filed Friday afternoon.

As of late Friday, three people had filed as candidates to replace Ueckert in Place 4, since filing began Feb. 9. They are John Gorena, Margie Rochelle and TJ Gilmore.

The terms of mayor and Place 2 expire this year. Mayor Gene Carey announced earlier this month that he will not seek re-election, after having served nine years as mayor. David Thornhill, the Place 2 incumbent, has filed as a candidate for re-election, and as of late Friday, had no opponent.

Lewisville City Secretary Julie Heinze said state laws set different filing deadlines for special elections and regular elections.

Whoever replaces Ueckert in the Place 4 position will serve out the one year remaining on his term. Ueckert will continue to serve in Place 4 until his replacement has been sworn in. That could come following the May 9 election, or following a runoff election, if one becomes necessary.
