Zachary Schrah, a 16-year-old Clark High School student, died Thursday night while working out during spring football training at Plano East Senior High School.
Peggy Harrell, a spokesperson for the Plano Fire Department, said responders received a medical call about 6:05 p.m. and arrived on scene shortly after the call.
Upon arrival, responders found a coach and a trainer performing CPR on Schrah. Harrell said the school's AED machine was also used while trying to save him. He also received CPR en route to the hospital.
Schrah was transported to Medical Center of Plano and was still alive when the original responders left the hospital. Harrell said Schrah was going to be flown to Children's Medical Center of Dallas, but he died before transport.
Nancy Long, Plano ISD communications coordinator, said that students at both Clark High School and Plano East Senior High School organized and led memorial services for Schrah Friday morning before school. Counselors on the district emergency response team joined with the Clark counselors to work with students throughout the day.
Clark High School is sending a letter home to families of students attending the school.
"We know that this death may bring to teenagers' minds the thoughts of past losses," the letter stated. "For the most part, teenagers need to have an opportunity to be heard and be able to express their emotions."
At this time, funeral arrangements have not been finalized for Schrah.
