Plano TEA parties to join ranks with nation
By Heather M. Smith, Staff writer
Some Plano residents will join people from across the country on tax day for a rally to protest the government’s spending habits.
On April 15, the last day for tax returns to be mailed, Taxed Enough Already (TEA) Party rallies will be held in front of city halls. Proponents of the rally object to the U.S. government spending “billions of dollars, which will leave our great-grandchildren a debt they must pay.” The American Family Association is one advocate for the rallies.
Plano resident Lorraine Parks said she volunteered to help organize a local “TEA Party” because she feels like things have gotten out of control.
Parks said she feels that it’s time for the nation to stand up and take the country back. Parks and her group will attend one rally in Plano, then travel to downtown Dallas.
“The larger the number, the more media coverage we’ll get,” Parks said. “I’m praying and hoping that it will make some changes within our congressional people in D.C. and that they start listening to people rather than lobbyists. Let’s get back to roots.”
According to the TEA Party Web site, some key issues the rallies are publicizing include Congress and the president voting for the bailout plan without reading it.
Plano resident Tom Gore is one of the organizers for the rallies in Plano. He said there will be a number of events in Plano and Dallas.
“I’m part of this because I’m fed up with the liberal spending of money that’s wasteful and will ruin our future,” Gore said. “This leads to inflation, debt and unemployment.”
Gore said he never thought he’d be a protestor, but he’s found that he is “fed up” with the current standing in America.
On tax day, four locations in Plano will host TEA parties beginning at 5 p.m. In Plano, rallies will be at the intersections of Preston and Parker roads, and Preston Road and Park Boulevard. In Frisco, rallies will be at Preston Road and Gaylord Parkway, and Preston and Lebanon roads. Finally, a rally will be held in McKinney at the intersection of El Dorado Parkway and Craig Drive.
During the rallies, attendees will pass out flyers and bumper stickers.
Gore said the intent is to raise awareness and send a voice to Washington, D.C. that “we don’t want to see this happen.” He also said they are asking people to shoe polish their windows to advertise the rallies.
Organizers of the nationwide TEA Party rallies suggest attendees bring their cell phones and call Congress and the president while attending the rally.
