Lewisville: Council candidates provide campaign finance reports

Published: Tuesday, April 14, 2009 2:50 PM CDT
Dean Ueckert has by far the most contributions, and the most expenditures so far in the race for mayor in the May 9 Lewisville City Council election.

Winston Edmondson Jr., also a candidate for the office of Lewisville mayor, said he is not accepting contributions.

Candidates for mayor and city council were required by law to turn in their first campaign finance reports no later than Friday, 30 days prior to the election. Candidates must submit a second report May 1.

In the only contested city council race, Place 4 candidate Margie Rochelle listed the most in campaign contributions, but John Gorena listed the most in expenditures. TJ Gilmore had the least amount of both contributions and expenditures.

Ueckert listed a total of $5,800 in total campaign contributions through April 10, and expenditures totaling $4,528.

Ueckert received several $500 contributions, including some from well-known families in Lewisville such as Ferguson, Huffines and Buck. He also received $500 contributions from a Flower Mound resident and a Dallas resident.

His major expenditures were $2,756.89 for campaign signs and related materials, and $1,651.63 for the printing of campaign flyers and mailers.

Edmondson reported no political contributions, but $3,576.37 in total political expenditures.

“I decided not to accept contributions,” Edmondson said. “This economy has us all hurting financially, so I've asked people to host coffee parties and meet and greet parties for me instead.”

His two major expenses were $1,360 for his commercials to be played twice before any movie at the Studio Movie Grill, and $1,252.90 for yard signs.

Concerning his commercials on the big screens, Edmondson said, “I thought it would be a good way to introduce myself to the people that I may not get a chance to meet in person, although we have been going door to door every weekend to meet as many people as possible.”

Ueckert said, of the contributions he has received, “I am honored and proud that citizens and business owners in Lewisville believe in me and support me. I believe it is because of my history of commitment to the city of Lewisville for the past 30 years. They know that I will continue to seek to improve the quality of life in Lewisville.”

Brandon Bertrand, who also has filed as a candidate for mayor, had not turned in a campaign finance report by noon Tuesday.

City Secretary Julie Heinze said, “He did not select modified reporting (in which they state they do not intend to accept more than $500 in political contributions or have more than $500 in political expenditures), which he would have had to have done 30 days prior to the election.”

In the Place 4 Lewisville Council race, Rochelle listed $1,849.17 in total political contributions. That amount included a donation of services to create a Web site, valued at $450 and services providing postage, the printing of a voters list and refreshments, valued at $504.17.

She listed her expenditures through April 10 as $453.35, including $297 as half payment for campaign signs.

Gorena listed $1,660 in total political contributions through April 10, and $1,548.36 in expenditures. He had a long list of contributors, who gave between $5 and $200 each to his campaign.

Gilmore listed $300 in total political contributions, from three contributors who gave $100 each. He listed expenditures at $70, including $40 an ad in a program for a Lewisville arts play, and $30 for a campaign document.

Highland Village voters will go to the polls on May 9 to decide on two contested races, in Place 3 and Place 7. Two women are running against each other in Place 3, and two men are vying for the Place 7 seat.

In Place 3, Charlotte Wilcox reported total political contributions of $1,450, and expenditures of $1,719.73, mostly for signs. Jeannetta Collier reported no political contributions, and $895.34 in expenditures, mostly for signs.

In Place 7, neither Bill Meek nor Bill Towe listed any campaign contributions. Meek listed $1,852 in total political expenditures, including $1,629.70 for signs. Towe listed $841.73 in expenditures, including $403.96 for campaign T-shirts and $273.47 for signs.

One candidate in Lewisville, and one in Highland Village, are seeking to be elected without an opponent.

They are Patrick Davis, candidate for Place 5 in Highland Village, and David Thornhill, who is seeking re-election to Place 2 in Lewisville.

Thornhill, who had an opponent who withdrew, listed no campaign contributions, but $644 in expenditures, including $594 for signs.

Davis filed for modified reporting, indicating that he did not intend to accept more than $500 in contributions or spend more than $500 on the campaign.
