One case at Hebron Valley confirmed to have swine flu; two schools’ proms rescheduled
By Chris Roark, Staff Writer
Lewisville ISD officials said Thursday that one case of swine influenza has been confirmed at Hebron Valley Elementary School in Carrollton. Two other cases at the school are still being tested, said LISD spokesperson Karen Permetti. She said results of those two should be available by the weekend.
LISD closed Hebron Valley on Wednesday because of three probable cases of swine flu.
Permetti said the school will be closed until May 7, which will give school officials seven consecutive days to disinfect and sanitize the campus.
In addition, the district is cancelling all activities until May 11, including band concerts and athletic events.
Thursday, the district also announced the postponement for the Marcus High School prom. The rescheduled date is May 16. The Colony High School’s prom has also been rescheduled, but a date has not been determined. Both proms were originally set for Saturday.
“They have been rescheduled because many kids bring a date who may not go to that specific campus,” Permetti said. “So, there’s a lot of co-mingling. The Denton County Health Department wants to minimize that. We want to have the prom when things aren’t at such a high concern.”
Permetti also said an SAT testing session, which was scheduled for Saturday at The Colony High School, has been rescheduled for a date to be determined.
Permetti said three people at Hebron Valley had symptoms of swine flu, and one of those people lives with someone who had the swine flu.
She added that despite students and faculty missing a week of school, students will not have to go an extra week of school to make up for the missed class time since the Texas Education Agency (TEA) allows districts to apply for waivers for unforeseen situations like this. Permetti also said the school’s staff would be compensated for the time off.
Permetti said the district is taking direction from the Denton County Health Department since LISD is a Denton County district. But, she said it's unknown whether the probable cases involve people from Denton, Dallas or Collin counties since all three counties are represented in the school's Pre School Program For Children With Disabilities program.
Symptoms of the swine flu are similar to the regular seasonal flu. Swine flu symptoms include: high fever of 100.5 degrees or higher, vomiting, diarrhea, severe headache, muscle and body aches, chills and fatigue. The health department warns that if a child has any of these symptoms, parents should call the child's doctor immediately. If the child is sick, he or she should stay home until there is no fever for 24 hours.
