Police arrested a man who robbed a convenience store at sword-point.

Phong Thanh Nguyen, 22, faces a first-degree felony county of aggravated robbery for holding up the clerk of a 7-11 convenience store on Eldorado Parkway with a sword for money and cigarettes, according to McKinney police officials.

McKinney Police Lt. Scott Brewer said the robbery occurred sometime before 2:41 a.m. at the 7-11 store located in the 7900 block of Eldorado Parkway. A clerk of the store told dispatchers that an unidentified Asian male entered the store, produced a sword and demanded cash and cigarettes. The man was also wearing "all black clothing."

The clerk complied the robber's request and the subject fled the store heading north on Stonebridge Driver in a gray Nissan Altima. The clerk also obtained the suspect's license plate number, Brewer said.

The clerk did not sustain any injuries during the course of the robbery.

Police responded to the call and found an identical vehicle just four minutes after the clerk placed the 911 call. Police initiated a traffic stop and discovered a sword, money and merchandise similar to those described by the store clerk, Brewer said.

The officer arrested the driver, later identified as Nguyen, and arrested him on a first-degree felony charge of aggravated robbery, a charge that carries a prison term between five and 99 years or life in prison upon conviction, according to the Texas Penal Code.

Nguyen is still being held in the Collin County Detention Center on a $50,000 bond as of Friday. He has no known home address, according to jail records.

Brewer said the clerk made the right move compiling calmly and quickly with the suspect's orders as well as obtaining information that helped officers arrest Nguyen so quickly.

"The MPD commends both the store clerk and the officers of the MPD for their deliberate actions that resulted in the apprehension of Nguyen," Brewer said in a released statement.
