Published: Tuesday, June 2, 2009 4:58 PM CDT
Austin, TX n This week Representative Robert Miklos was named the House Democratic Freshman of the Year by the House Democratic Caucus. Miklos received the award as part of the activities at the end of the 81st Legislative Session.

"It is nice to have all of your hard work recognized by your peers," Miklos said.

Rep. Miklos ushered numerous bills through the House including: HB 1770, a measure giving cities like Mesquite more economic development options; HB 1060, which updates technology for the Dallas County Sheriff's Department in forwarding arrest warrants; and SB 461, updating the law regarding fire fighter examinations.

Miklos teamed up with Senator John Carona to be the House sponsor for SB 11, the omnibus anti-street gang bill in the House. The bill calls for tougher penalties on gang members, expands a gang database for law enforcement officers, gives law enforcement the ability to seize property from those involved in organized crime, and creates gang free zones.

"It doesn't feel like that long ago that I took my oath as a State Representative," Miklos said. "It is a blessing and a privilege to represent Mesquite, Balch Springs and Sunnyvale and fight for the safety and economic future of the families in the District."

Representative Miklos served on the Criminal Jurisprudence and Urban Affairs Committees. He was named Chairman of the Subcommittee on Capital Punishment, where he presided over hearings regarding the death penalty.

"With his knowledge and expertise, Rep. Miklos was an invaluable member of the Criminal Jurisprudence Committee. He handled his role as Chairman of the Subcommittee of Capitol Punishment with grace and professionalism," Representative Pete Gallego said.

On the Urban Affairs Committee, Miklos worked on issues pertaining to cities and municipal workers.

"I was proud to serve on the Criminal Jurisprudence and Urban Affairs Committees. I was flattered that Chairman Gallego gave me the opportunity to lead the Subcommittee on Capital Punishment," Miklos said. "Members of each committee worked well together, and I think we wrotedid important and lasting legislation for the State of Texas."

Representative Miklos returns home to Mesquite to his wife and three sons. He will continue to practice law, and will also be available at his district office.
