Plano 12-year-old dies in boating accident
By Stephanie Flemmons, Staff Writer
A 12-year-old Plano boy died after being run over by a boat while attending a Boy Scout troop outing on Lake Lavon Saturday.
Gary Collins, a game warden with Texas Parks and Wildlife, said John Potanka and another boy were being towed behind a boat on a tube. He said Potanka fell off the tube and while the adult driver attempted to pick him up, he was run over by the propeller.
“The dad of the boy, the adult driver along with eight kids witnessed this tragedy,” Collins said. “Everyone was very, very distraught.”
“The game warden in Collin County is conducting an investigation and interviewing witnesses,” Collins said. “There was no alcohol involved. This is just a bad accident involving innocent people.”
It was reported Potanka just completed the sixth grade at Schimelpfenig Middle School in Plano. Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church located at 2700 West Spring Creek Parkway in Plano.

" Basic common sense is few & far between these days. Any captain of a boat with so many kids aboard, should know how to tie his own shoes! "
