John Gorena defeated TJ Gilmore by an eight-vote margin in Saturday’s Lewisville City Council Place 4 runoff election.

Gorena received a total of 529 votes and Gilmore received 521 votes, including early voting ballots.

Gorena will fill the unexpired term of Dean Ueckert, who was elected mayor May 9. His term expires next May.

Gorena will take the oath of office after a canvassing of the ballots by the council in a called city council meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday at city hall.

Gorena was able to win the election despite the fact that the current mayor, at least one previous mayor, two current city council members and at least one former city council member had endorsed his opponent.

In early voting, it was a tie, with both candidates receiving 383 votes. Voting was light on Election Day Saturday, with Gorena receiving a total of 146 votes, including 64 at Memorial Park, 55 at the Municipal Annex and 27 at city hall.

Gilmore received a total of 138 votes on Election Day, including 44 at Memorial Park, 64 at the Municipal Annex and 30 at city hall.

In all, Gorena received 50.38 percent of the votes and Gilmore, 49.62 percent.

City Secretary Julie Heinze said there would no purpose in Gilmore calling for a recount, because votes are recorded electronically and a recount would produce the same results.

After the election, Gorena said Saturday night, “I want to thank all who supported me and all who believed in me. We have a lot of work to do and will likely have to do it all over again next year.

Gilmore said, “Congratulations to John and I wish him the best of luck.” He also thanked his supporters.

Asked if he plans to make another run for the Place 4 council seat next year, Gilmore said, “That is an option we will have to explore.”
