Free class helps prepare students
By Heather M. Smith, Staff writer
For incoming college freshmen, who feel they aren’t fully prepared for college math, Collin College is offering a free refresher course.
Collin College’s summer math bridge program is accepting applications through July 10. The program is designed for students entering college, who want a refresher math course before they take on college math classes. It specifically targets those who feel they are not ready for college algebra. The program is taught by Collin College professors.
“The objective of this course is to have all the students place into at least college algebra level math class or higher at the end of the time,” said Brooke Ingersoll, destination college coordinator. “This is also a way for students to save money because they won’t have to take lower level math classes.”
The class is open to all 2009 high school graduates who have taken at least Algebra II or higher in high school. During the program, students will review the concepts learned in Algebra II. Any college degree that students might want, require at least one college level math course. Collin College has found that many students are not ready for their first college math course. However, the college feels that the program can help revitalize the student’s skills.
Ingersoll said space is limited and there are students who have already signed up for the class. In order to register for the class, students must complete and return an application and take a free math assessment at any Collin College campus by July 10 at 5 p.m. The test will include basic math questions and should take students 45 minutes to one hour to complete.
“Our general focus is for people going to Collin College, they will get preference,” Ingersoll said. “However, we strive to get everyone ready for college. A large portion, not a majority, of incoming college freshmen are unprepared for college math. It would be more advantageous for students to take math classes throughout high school.”
Testing centers for the math assessment are located at: Central Park Campus, room B342; Preston Ridge Campus, room F208; and Spring Creek Campus, room J232. Hours are 8 a.m.-9 p.m., Monday through Thursday; 8 a.m.-3 p.m., Friday; and 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturday. The last test is administered two hours before closing.
“We try to keep as much individual instruction for the program as possible, so we cap it at 30 students,” Ingersoll said. “We’ve offered this program for a couple years and as far as I know, the majority of the students scored better at the end of it.”
