Program offered to help residents save money
By Heather M. Smith, Staff writer
Green Mountain Energy Company and Standard Renewable Energy (SRE) have teamed together to help Collin County residents save on their electric bill.
The two companies have created the most affordable way for residents to install and use solar panel systems. SRE is offering its statewide instant rebate and lowest price guarantee that expires July 31. Green Mountain is offering its renewable rewards buy-back program. In addition, area homeowners could qualify for additional rebates from Oncor, which could mean a total savings of up to 80 percent on a solar panel system.
“These offers, coupled with the 30 percent federal tax credit on the cost of the solar panel systems, could put even more money back into Texans' pockets, while supporting cleaner energy,” said Jordan Fruge, senior vice president for Standard Renewable Energy.
“Since we launched the renewable rewards buy-back program we have seen increased interest from customers who want to install a home solar system and participate in our Buy-Back program,” said Paul Markovich, senior vice president, Green Mountain Energy Company. “It is clear that many Texans want solar power for their homes.”
During June and July, SRE is offering a “State of Texas Solar Panel System Instant Rebate.” Through this offer Texas residents have the opportunity to receive a $2 per watt instant rebate on an installed solar panel system. SRE also said that it will offer customers a lowest price guarantee. The company said it can beat any price on a solar system.
Green Mountain and SRE want to help Texans take advantage of the benefits of clean, renewable energy by making it accessible and affordable.
“We’ve had an existing partnership with Standard Renewable Energy for several years,” Markovich. “They’ve done a number of installations of solar panels for us. According to the plan that we have, if somebody put solar panels on their homes totaling 500 kilowatt hours, they could save between $50-75.”
Markovich said the program is open to almost everyone. He said Green Mountain’s role in the partnership is to help the customer. Green Mountain is one of only two companies that are willing to buy back electricity that is put back on grid, according to Markovich.
In order to participate in the offer, first homeowners need to switch to Green Mountain for their energy company. The second step is to establish an interconnection agreement with OnCor. Markovich said OnCor will install a meter that reads the electricity going in and out of house. The next step for customers is to go to Green Mountain to buy the renewable supply electcricty to home their home. The electricity is 100 percent wind, according to Markovich. He said people need the other electricity because solar doesn’t supply everything. Finally, Green Mountain will then buy back, at the same rate it was purchased, any electricity a customer puts back on the grid.
“People should do this program because it is a great thing to do from an environmental stand point also with all the rebates it makes it more economical,” Markovich said. “Green Mountain is a pollution free company. We feel that anybody who is willing to put solar on their roof is our kind of customer. We’ve always been the “green guys.” Our company was built on a mission to change how power is made.”
