God’s Food Pantry struggling to make end’s meet
By Kim Nguyen, Staff Writer
Despite the down economy and the increase of clients seeking assistance, God’s Food Pantry is receiving needed some help.
Non-profits around the country have been trying to stretch their dollar to maximize spending efficiency. God’s Food Pantry has been struggling to make end’s meet.
Sue Soun, one of the coordinators for the Lake Tawakoni Trade Days, and her husband have pledged to donate all new vendor space rental fees to help God’s Food Pantry pay for rent in August.
The Lake Tawakoni Trade Days are flea markets that take place every weekend in Quinlan. The number of vendors and shoppers varies each weekend.
Soun said the flea market-style exchange of goods at the Lake Tawakoni Trade Days is a quick and easy way to “get rid of old junk” and get some cash at the same time.
“I have five or six regular vendors every weekend, but no new ones are signing up right now,” she said. “The more vendors show up, the more shoppers come and that helps bring in new vendors to sell their things.”
“We’re seeing new clients come in everyday,” said Linda White, president of the pantry. “Eight here, 10 there and that’s manageable. But one day last week 25 new clients came in. It has been an extremely busy summer.”
Pantry volunteers are working frivolously to keep up with the incoming stream of new and returning clients. White said that while food donations come in, monetary donations are dwindling.
Monetary support helps God’s Food Pantry purchase additional non-perishable goods, but more importantly, pays the rent and utility bills.
“We barely had enough to cover for the rent this month, and it’s been that way for a while now,” White said.
Suon is hoping interest in vendorship increases over the next few weeks, not only to sell goods, but to help God’s Food Pantry, too.
“It feels great that there’s somebody willing to help support and back the pantry, especially during these hard times,” White said. “It’ll really take everyone pulling together to make it work.”
