Woman suffers critical burns from cooking accident

Published: Monday, August 17, 2009 4:27 PM CDT
A propane tank being used to cook inside an enclosed townhome ignited into flames leaving a woman in critical condition, Monday.

The woman, 55, was cooking using the propane gas tank and was wearing a robe that covered her entire body.

According to Floyd Jones, Plano fire spokesman, the build up of gas caused the fire to ignite and blew out the kitchen window. He said the woman’s clothing were completely engulfed in flames.

Jones said when crews arrived about 10:15 a.m. they discovered the woman was suffering about 80 percent burns across her body. She was transported priority one by Care Flight to Parkland Hospital.

“There was very little fire damage to the house,” Jones said. “It was a flash fire, like an explosion.”

Jones said the home, located in the 2100 block of Oklahoma, was equipped with fire sprinklers, which deployed when the fire ignited.

“If it weren’t for the fire sprinklers, there would have been more damage and more work for fire crews,” Jones said. “If anyone else would have been in the home, the fire sprinklers would have contributed to their safety by stopping the spread of the fire.”

Jones said he believes cultural differences played a part in this fire that violated many safety issues.

“Obviously cooking indoors with propane and loose fitting clothes are a heath hazard and a safety hazard,” Jones said. “Most people know these things. They are covered in fire and cooking safety classes. Since she is not from here, her cultural differences led to not knowing proper safety tactics.”
