Frisco resident pedals for children
By Jef Tingley, Special Contributor
After competing for more than four years as a professional cyclist in events throughout the U.S., Central and South America, Frisco resident and father of two Geoff Godsey now finds himself with the bike pedal on the other foot … so to speak.
Godsey currently serves as executive director for TX Tough, a pledge-based fundraiser that raises money exclusively for Children’s Medical Center through a series of running, biking and swimming events. In 2008, TX Tough’s first year, 105 local fundraising teams raised more than $320,000 for Children’s Medical Center.
"I am fortunate to have been surrounded by quality people willing to provide guidance and direction that have shaped me into who I am today,” Godfrey said. “TX Tough offers me that same opportunity: a chance to give back to both the community and a sport that has been good to me while making a positive impact on thousands of people’s lives.”
The centerpiece of the TX Tough Bike Events is the TX Tough Bike Bash, a 6.2-mile, traffic-free bike ride starting at Victory Park that takes participants through the heart of downtown Dallas.
Riders of all skill levels are invited to participate and cruise the untimed course in addition to enjoying fun and fitness activities at the finish in Victory Park. The Bike Bash is set for 8 a.m. to noon Sept. 20.
The TX Tough Grand Prix II is the only professional bike race produced in Texas and the final showdown before the USA CRITS series finale in Las Vegas. Spectator admittance to the second annual event is free and open to the public.
TX Tough is really designed with a “something for everyone approach.”
"We want everyone to know there's a way for them to get involved with helping children through TX Tough, no matter how athletic they are or aren't,” Godfrey said. “Bottom line, TX Tough is about having fun and making a difference in the lives of the kids at Children's Medical Center.”
Among those participating is Frisco resident JC Graham, a senior vice president at Merrill Lynch. JC is a member of the Champion for Children’s Team and has already raised more than $7,400 this year that will be designating to be used by Children’s Heart Center.
One of the unique aspects of TX Tough’s fundraising approach is that participants can designate which program, service or clinic at Children’s Medical Center they want their donations to benefit.
Additionally, fundraising for Children’s Medical Center has added importance to Frisco residents now that the hospital has a location serving Collin County. Children’s at Legacy provides more convenient access to the hospital’s world-class medical care for the growing number of families with young children in the Frisco community.
Godsey also brought his expertise as a cyclist to the table to help design the kick-off of TX Tough’s Bike Stage, a pro cycling event called the TX Tough Grand Prix. The event, set at 6:40 p.m. Sept. 17 at Victory Park, will raise awareness for Children's Medical Center and TX Tough's fundraising events by featuring some of the world's top professional cyclists.
The international field will compete in what is known as a criterium or "crit," reaching speeds of up to 50 miles per hour as they navigate through the streets around Victory Park and American Airlines Center for more than 60 laps.
