The McKinney Performing Arts Center and Southern Land are hosting a free outdoor concert from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Tucker Hill subdivision on State Highway 380. This is west of U.S. 75. Time Machine will play a variety of music: Top 40, 80s, disco, soul and country. Bring lawn chairs and blankets. Food and beverages will be sold.
DEMOCRATS: NEW LOCAL LEADER
The 45-year-old attorney vice chairman of the county Democratic Party from 2003 to 2008.
Also appointed are Marlene Byndon as vice chair, Mary Beans as secretary, and Oscar Pena as treasurer.
SERVICE ACADEMY FORUM
U.S. Congressman Sam Johnson (3rd Dist.-Texas) will host the annual Service Academies Forum at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 12 for young people and their families interested in pursuing an education at one of the nation’s prestigious service academies.
The free informational event will take place in the Conference Center of the Collin College Spring Creek Campus located at 2800 E. Spring Creek Parkway in Plano.
HOCKEY IN MCKINNEY
The newest Dr Pepper StarCenter in McKinney at Craig Ranch will hold its grand opening ceremony at noon on Saturday, Sept. 19 at noon. The festivities will begin with the official ribbon cutting ceremony at noon, followed by free public skating and youth hockey and figure skating exhibitions.
"On behalf of Mayor Loughmiller and the City Council, we are thrilled to open the Dr. Pepper StarCenter McKinney at Craig Ranch. Our residents have been asking for this new public recreation facility, and we are extremely pleased to come through on this promise to bring it to them," said City Manager Frank Ragan.
Everyone in attendance at the grand opening will receive two tickets to a Dallas Stars home pre-season game.
Dr Pepper is providing free beverages, and kids will love the face painters, balloon animal artists and fantastic inflatables courtesy of the Dallas Stars Street Squad.
Fans can register to win great prizes, including complimentary skate school passes, ice skating passes and a complimentary birthday party at the Dr Pepper StarCenter – McKinney at Craig Ranch.
The Dr Pepper StarCenter McKinney at Craig Ranch is built on 7.3 acres of land in Craig Ranch. The project is a partnership between the Dallas Stars, the City of McKinney, the McKinney Community Development Corporation and Craig Ranch.
The ice rink will offer annual skating and hockey scholarships to young residents of McKinney.
McKinney residents will have a three-day priority period before non-residents in which to register for major programs at the facility like hockey or ice skating leagues, clinics and camps.
This new facility has two sheets of ice, a full-service StarStuff pro shop, a snack bar and four meeting rooms. The StarCenter will be the home to two hockey associations -- the McKinney Ice Hockey Club which fields teams in the AT&T High School Hockey League, and the Texas Aces, which fields travel teams of all ages in the North Texas Hockey League.
The facility will also feature beginner leagues for youth and adult hockey players run by the Dallas Stars, advanced adult hockey leagues, a Learn-to-Skate program, figure skating, birthday parties, public skating, corporate team building events, private ice rentals, camps, clinics, tournaments and skating competitions.
It is expected that the facility will bring in 400,000 to 500,000 visitors annually. In addition, the Dallas Stars Hockey Club will practice at the Dr Pepper StarCenter McKinney at Craig Ranch once every year. The first practice at the rink is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 4.
DUCKS UNLIMITED
Fannin County Ducks Unlimited will hold its Annual Banquet on Tuesday, September 29 at the Legacy Ridge Country Club beginning at 6 p.m.
The mission of Ducks Unlimited is to restore, enhance and protect international efforts of conserving habitat for waterfowl and other wildlife. At Ducks Unlimited, 85 percent of the revenue goes directly to habitat conservation.
The banquet will feature a dinner, games, raffles and a silent and live auction. Prizes include: guns, hunting trips, knives, prints and outdoor gear.
The banquet is open to the public and tickets are available at Rick’s Detail Shop in Bonham. Cost - $40 per person prior to Sept. 22 and $50 at the door. Pre-event gun raffle tickets are available for $50 (includes membership, dinner and a chance at a Benelli shotgun to be raffled at the banquet.)
REBA AND CHARLIE DANIELS
Reba McEntire and the Charlie Daniels Band will be among the early performers at the Allen Events Center, which opens in November. Reba McEntire will perform her classic hits along with songs from her newest album, Keep on Loving You, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200

The Allen Event Center, a 8,100-seat sports and entertainment venue opening in November 2009, has announced its initial entertainment lineup with six show dates for the fall/winter season. Country superstar Reba McEntire will headline the grand opening concert on Friday, Nov. 6.

PROSPER ARTS & MUSIC FESTIVAL
The third-annual Prosper Arts & Music Festival will be held on Oct. 3 in the Prosper Town Center at Broadway and Preston Road The Prosper Arts & Music Festival is sponsored by the Prosper Texas Chamber of Commerce, area wide businesses and local builders. This one-day event from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. is free.
Organizers said, "During the Festival we will have an art gallery of regional artists and crafters. Handcrafted or painted, one of a kind art and crafts will be available for festival attendees to purchase that day. The artists and crafters will be in their booths for festival go-ers to meet and discuss their work. Many artists will be seen painting or creating their current projects during the show. Much of the artwork displayed will be high caliber, investment quality art by professional artists.
"The main stage of the festival will feature the live music of local bands, solo artists and more. Several types of music will be featured such as jazz, gospel, rock & roll or country. There will be live music to appeal to folks of any generation."
In association with the Arts and Music Festival, the Town of Prosper’s Fire & Police Department will host their annual Health & Safety Fair. Booths featuring health and safety tips, a Care Flight helicopter, fire engines and EMS units will be on site during the festival.
A Kids Corner featuring pony rides, a barrel train and unique interactive crafts will be a highlight of the Festival for families and “kids of all ages”. A food court will be available for all to sample and enjoy near the main stage tent.

St. Philip Church is holding auditions for the All Saints Eve Christian Youth Talent Show for ages 10 to 17 on Oct. 10. Registration fee is $5.
