First Hindu temple in Denton County opens in Flower Mound
By Chris Roark, Staff Writer
Members of the Hindu community in Denton County celebrated the opening of the Flower Mound Hindu Temple on Sunday.
The Hindu temple is the only one in Denton County.
More than 300 families attended the event that began at 6 a.m. Saturday with a worship known as Prana Prathista, as well as worshiping of the fire (Homan), and the worshiping of the cow.
"This takes me closer to the temples of India," said Corinth resident Rani Sawhney, who said she and others previously have had to drive to south Irving to attend services. "Also, this provides spiritual growth. We want our children to be exposed to this for the future of Hinduism."
The process for obtaining a local place of worship began in February, and members spent the last several months bringing in the community. The temple, located at 3325 Long Prairie Road, opened Aug. 15. But Sunday's event was the first in which the deities were at the location.
Raj Duggal said there are about 700 to 800 Hindu families in Denton County.
"This is an important day because this can be a place where we can meet our cultural, devotional and religious needs," Duggal said. "It's a day that brings together the Hindu community as one to worship the Hindu gods and goddesses."
Duggal added that as the community involvement grows, the temple will likely be expanded to another facility.
