Marcus holds on to ball, hangs on for win
By Chris Roark Staff Writer
LEWISVILLE -- Not only did Marcus do just about everything right Friday night, it also took advantage of the frequent times that Tyler Lee wasn't able to.
The Marauders rebounded from last weekend's loss to Katy by beating Lee, 17-7, in front of a packed crowd on Homecoming Night at Goldsmith Stadium.
The win moves Marcus to 3-1 to wrap up non-district play as it heads into a bye week. Lee drops to 0-4.
"We work hard on that," said Bryan Erwin, Marcus head coach. "It's not magic, and there's no secret to it. I'm proud of our quarterback, running backs and receivers for always taking care of the ball. That's our No. 1 goal, and we've done well with it."
Lee, on the other hand ... not so much. The Raiders fumbled the ball four times, losing two of them. Marcus' first fumble recovery led to Trevor Mouton's 45-yard field goal as time expired in the first quarter.
Toward the end of the third quarter, Lee fumbled again. This time, Ian Davis recovered it for the Marauders. Though Marcus didn't score on the ensuing drive, it ultimately put Lee in a touch position. The Marauders were forced to punt to cap the 12-play drive, and as the ball bounced near the Lee end zone, Colten Conner grabbed it to pin the Raiders at their own 2-yard line.
Marcus used the next drive to put the game away as quarterback Brode Boyd found tight end Rhett Butler for a 14-yard touchdown pass to make it 17-7, giving Marcus its biggest cushion of the second half.
Running back Stephen Hopkins had made it 10-0 in the second quarter on an 8-yard touchdown run, but Lee later followed with a 2-yard touchdown run by Chris Dinkins in the period to cut Marcus' lead to 10-7 heading into halftime.
Hopkins finished the night rushing 22 times for 117 yards. Rufus Mason and Dagan Newsome combined to run for 71 yards.
Lee wasn't able to do as well. Though it had speedy running backs -- Dinkins ran for 105 yards on nine carries -- Lee struggled to get anything consistent going on the ground as its attempts to cut to the outside were foiled by the Marcus defense all night.
"They have a ton of speed," Erwin said of Lee. "They can get in bed and turn the lights out before the sun goes down. But our defense did a great job on them."
Despite accumulating 11 first downs, Lee only got inside the Marcus 30-yard line one time.
