Plano: Collin County judge finds Holmes murder suspect unable to stand trial

Published: Friday, September 25, 2009 12:10 PM CDT
A Collin County district judge ruled that a Plano murder suspect will not stand trial for his brutal crime and instead will undergo mental treatment.

District Judge Chris Oldner heard expert testimony in a competency hearing Wednesday and agreed with the results of a psychiatric evaluation stating that Ronald Stevens was not competent to stand trial.

“He was reprimanded to the custody of the sheriff and will be sent to a mental health facility for 120 days,” said Steven’s attorney Derk Wadas. “The mental health facility will only return him when it is their opinion he is competent to stand trial or find he will never be competent to stand trial.”

Davis, 47, was arrested in February for the brutal slaying of a man by the name of Sherlock Holmes, 68, in his Plano home located in the Douglass Community.

Davis has an extensive criminal history and was admitted to multiple mental institutions since 1983. A criminal background check revealed Davis was arrested 16 times; several of those arrests were for aggravated assault.

Plano police linked Davis to the murder after uncovering cell phone records from Holmes’ missing phone.

Plano detectives confirmed that Davis made calls to his family members from Holmes’ cell phone. His family members told police they never knew Davis to have a cell phone of his own.

Holmes’ son, Tony, told police his father always kept his phone close to him because he had heart disease.

According to court records, Holmes was allowing Davis to reside at his house, but asked him to leave for not paying rent.

Witnesses told police the two individuals had an argument the day of Holmes’ death. Police believe Holmes was dead inside his home for about two days.

A female friend of Holmes walked inside his residence Jan. 29 and found him dead.

When police arrived about 12:45 a.m. they discovered Holmes’ body lying in a pool of blood with a folded metal chair positioned on top of his body. Police believe the metal chair found at the scene was used in Holmes’ death. Collin County Medical Examiner William Rohr, M.D., ruled the death of Holmes a homicide by blunt force trauma.
