Medicine slideshow: New digital camera reveals skin damage early

By Sally Huggins, Special Contributor
It can take years for skin damage caused by sun exposure to reveal itself – wrinkles around the eyes, moles and freckles, age spots, and dry, leathery skin. But the newest technology used by Medical Center of McKinney Dermatologist James Ralston, MD, can identify sun damage even before it’s visible on the face.
The Reveal® is a special digital camera that shows subsurface pigmentation and vascular features, and within minutes shows Dr. Ralston exactly where there is damage and inflammation caused by the sun.
“The sun’s rays contain ultraviolet radiation that can damage the skin’s DNA, causing premature aging, wrinkles and cancer,” said Dr. Ralston. “This tool helps us identify areas that could lead to skin cancer, and develop a highly targeted treatment course to help patients reverse the negative effects of the sun.”
“Treating sun damage can make a difference. The topical creams and cosmetic procedures will reduce the brown spots, lighten freckles and improve the look and texture of the skin,” said Dr. Ralston. “These treatments will help you feel and look younger.”
The key to ensure the sun damage doesn’t reoccur is to always protect your skin against the sun, all seasons of the year, including cloudy and snowy days. Up to 80 percent of the sun's ultraviolet rays can pass through the clouds. Often times people forget to apply sunscreen when they are around water, in the wintertime, or enjoying a ski vacation.
