Marcus sophomore among artists on Disney soundtrack

While Hayley Orrantia is still working to reach a national level of fame, her fans can already get a glimpse of what could be in store for them in the future.
Orrantia, a sophomore at Marcus High School, is among 12 artists featured on the "Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure" soundtrack, which became available Sept. 22. The soundtrack is sold on iTunes, as well as at Barnes & Noble. The movie is in general release Oct. 27.
Her song, "The Magic of a Friend,” accompanies music from such artists as Selena Gomez, Jesse McCartney, Jordin Sparks and Demi Lovato.
The performance location takes on another meaning as her recently-released EP titled "Hayley O" is being exclusively sold at Sweet & Sassy inside the Shops at Highland Village.
Orrantia admits she isn't as well known as the other singers, but she hopes that will soon change.
"I've seen the CD at the store, and it's crazy," Orrantia said, adding that her name being spelled wrong in the first set of the soundtrack made the experience even more unusual. "It's cool to know that my song is on a CD with a bunch of other famous people, and it makes me feel like I'm one step closer."
One step closer to a career that would ideally include singing and acting.
This past summer was a busy one for Orrantia. In May, she agreed to be managed by Jamie Houston, who has written songs for Lovato, The Jonas Brothers, Santana and Macy Gray. He has also written several songs for the "High School Musical" movies.
Orrantia traveled to Los Angeles for what she thought was going to be a three-day trip to record songs. While she was there, she got an opportunity to audition for a lead role in "High School Musical 4", as well as pilot episodes for three Disney TV sitcoms and a made-for-TV movie called "Starstruck."
"Because those went so positively, we stayed the next week," said her mother, Melody Orrantia. "Then she'd get a call back, and we'd stay even longer. It was a crazy summer, but this is what she wants."
Orrantia has also had meetings with representatives from Island Def Jam Records, and two weeks ago met with Epic Records and Universal Records, Melody Orrantia said.
"There's no deal yet, but we had good meetings," she said. "But, she's generating interest from some major record labels."
For now, Orrantia is keeping her options open on what route to take. She has been singing for several years, and her success started to take form within the last year. In October of 2008, she performed on the Chevy Main Stage at the State Fair of Texas. She and three others opened for pop music star Jordan Pruitt, a result of finishing in the top four of an internet song competition hosted by the Texas Music Project. Hayley was the overall winner. In addition to the opportunity to perform, she also won a package that included graphics support and 1,000 CDs from Crystal Clear Tapes, 10 hours of recording time and a $1,000 grant to her school’s music department.
She used her winnings to record "Hayley O," which features three cover songs, such as "Listen to Your Heart," and two songs she wrote.
Still, she's considering acting, something she has really only pursued formally for two years.
"My goal is either being on the Disney Channel or finding a good record label that's willing to promote young singers," Orrantia said.
In the meantime, Orrantia is hoping for success that stems from "The Magic of a Friend," which was written by Houston.
"It's a beautiful ballad, and it went well with the mood of the movie," Orrantia said. "In the movie, Tinkerbell gets into a fight with her friend who thinks she has made a bad decision. So this is like an apology song."
Other songs on the soundtrack include "Gift of a Friend" by Lovato and "Fly to Your Heart" by Gomez.
In December, Orrantia will record a remake of Phil Collins' song "Look Through My Eyes" for Disneymania 7, which will be available next year.
