Around Town: Congressman's Youth Council, big weekend
Sam Johnson announces 2009-2010 CYAC
U.S. Congressman Sam Johnson (3rd Dist.-Texas) held the inaugural meeting with the 2009-2010 Congressional Youth Advisory Council (CYAC) over the weekend. This year, 45 students representing 26 area high schools (including public, private and home-schools) make up the distinguished group; 11 students are returning members.
“I consider these students my young ambassadors to Congress. They keep me updated on what’s important to their generation,” said Johnson. “I look forward to another terrific and engaging year filled with informed debate and lively discussions.”
At the December meeting, elected local leaders representing many levels of government will visit face to face with the members of the CYAC.
Because of intense community interest, students may serve two of four years between ninth and 12th grade. This ensures more students will have the opportunity to participate.

OLD FASHION DAY
Central Baptist Church of McKinney is inviting the community out for its annual Old Fashion Day from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 25. Rain or Shine. HALLOWEEN AT HEARD
Tickets are on sale for the third annual Halloween at the Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary will be from 6 to 10 p.m. Oct. 24.
Overheard at the Heard: Get your Halloween candy from life-size dinosaurs! This is a safe, family-friendly event at the Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary in McKinney.
Trick-or-treat along the Dinosaurs Alive! trail with nine life-sized, animatronic dinosaurs. Enjoy the family-friendly movie, Monster House under the stars in the Heard's outdoor amphitheater. Kids 12 and under can participate in costume contests and KLTY 94.9 radio will be on-site 6-8 PM.
Concessions will be available for purchase including Peter Piper Pizza and Del's Frozen Lemonade. FUNDRAISER
Lindsay High School is holding a fundraiser Friday night, Oct. 23 before the Lady Knights volleyball game against Blue Ridge Lady Tigers. The fundraiser benefits Lindsay first-grader Lilly Dieter, who has been diagnosed with cancer.
Donations will be accepted during the volleyball game for "kills."
The fundraiser will include a German sausage dinner starting at 4 p.m. for $5 per plate, which will be served until 7 p.m. The event includes a silent auction and raffle. The varsity game begins at 5 p.m.
ADRIATICA
The Adriatica Merchants Association will host the annual Trunk or Treat event for residents of McKinney from 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 24.
The event will start at the Adriatica parking lot in front of Nan Lee Jewelry. Ttrick-or-treat your way across to the bell tower and over the dam towards the Halloween Spooktacular taking place at the Stonebridge beach and tennis club. Information: 972-540-2739.
CELINA FUN DAY
The 30th annual Lynn Stambaugh Celina Fun Day will take place from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Oct. 24. Booth spaces are available for $40 and $50. PUMPKIN FEST
The Village at Allen will celebrate the change in seasons with its first annual “Pumpkin Fest” from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24. The free event is open to the public and will include a variety of fall-themed activities for the entire family.
Pumpkin Carving Contest
Calling all creative carvers! The Village at Allen will hold its first-ever pumpkin carving contest with judging to take place at “Pumpkin Fest” on Oct. 24. Categories include scariest pumpkin, funniest pumpkin, most creative pumpkin and largest pumpkin. Entry is open to both experienced and amateur carvers. Participants should bring their already carved pumpkin to the event at 2:00 p.m. to register for the contest. Judges from the Visual Arts League of Allen will select a first and second place winner from each category. Winners will receive a gift card to The Village at Allen/The Village at Fairview, which may be used at any of the center’s participating stores and restaurants.
Pumpkin Dessert Contest
Do you have a prize-worthy pumpkin pie, bread or other pumpkin dessert recipe? Guests can enter their culinary creations into the pumpkin dessert contest at “Pumpkin Fest” for the chance to win a gift card to The Village at Allen/The Village at Fairview. To enter, individuals should bring their homemade pumpkin dessert to “Pumpkin Fest” at 2:00 p.m. to register for the contest. Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place. Judging will be based on taste, texture and appearance. All entries must contain either canned or fresh pumpkin.
Pie Eating Contest (will begin at 4:15 p.m.)
Men, women and children are invited to participate in the pie eating contest. Try to eat a nine-inch pumpkin pie in under one minute without using hands or utensils for the chance to win a gift card to The Village at Allen/The Village at Fairview. Winners will be chosen based on audience applause, so be prepared to get messy! The contest will begin at approximately 4:15 p.m. after the winners for the pumpkin carving and pumpkin dessert contests have been announced. Participants will be divided into age categories, and participation is limited to individuals 6 years of age and older. All participants will be required to register and sign a liability waiver form before competing in the contest.
Pumpkin Decorating
The Village at Allen will provide mini pumpkins and an array of craft materials for children to create an original pumpkin design. In addition, guests will be able take their decorated pumpkins home to display for Halloween.
Pumpkin Seed-Spittin’ Contest
Leave your manners at home. Spit a pumpkin seed past the designated line and win a prize. The pumpkin seed-spittin’ contest will be ongoing throughout “Pumpkin Fest.” Children under 12 must have a parent or guardian’s consent to participate.
Pumpkin Hockey
The Allen Americans’ Ice Angels dancers will cheer on guests that want to show off their hockey skills by shooting a mini pumpkin into a hockey goal. This activity will be ongoing throughout “Pumpkin Fest” and open to all ages.
Story Time
Young guests are sure to enjoy story time at “Pumpkin Fest.” Kids can sit on hay bales while listening to fall-themed stories. Stories will be read at 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
Canine Costumes
“Pumpkin Fest” at The Village at Allen has gone to the dogs. Four-legged friends are invited to play in Canine Commons Dog Park and show off their Halloween costumes early. Bring your four-legged friends to The Village at Allen table at “Pumpkin Fest” in The Grove to receive a treat.
Face Painting
It wouldn’t be a festival without a face painter. Stop by the face painting station for a special fall design.
Pumpkin House
The Village at Allen is hard at work constructing a house made of pumpkins that is sure to provide the perfect fall photo op for children and families.

GRANTS
The City of McKinney announces the availability funding for eligible non-profit agencies and community organizations that serve residents of McKinney. The Community Support Grant (CSG) allows the flexibility to apply for funding under the following priority of needs:
Disaster aid
Basic needs, like food and clothing
Housing - both financial and non-financial assistance
Health and medical, including mental health
Transportation
Recreation and athletics
The application and instructions will be available at the city’s Web site, www.mckinneytexas.org, under the heading, Community Services/General Information.
The Community Grants Advisory Commission (CGAC) will review all applications and make recommendations to City Council for approval. Applications must be received no later than Friday, Oct. 9 at 5 p.m. Please submit applications to the following address: City of McKinney, Development Services Department, 221 N. BEAT THE FRIDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL TRAFFIC
Did you know that you can take the shuttle to a high school football game?
Well, you can.
McKinney Support Services is running shuttles for all home varsity football games this season.
Durham Transportation will provide three (3) shuttle buses from each of the campuses involved in a game at Ron Poe Stadium.
The shuttles will run every fifteen (15) minutes starting at 5 p.m.. for cross-town games and 5:15 p.m. for all other home games. They will run for one (1) hour after the game ends.

BATTLE FOR MYERS LANDING
On Nov. 7-8 the Myers Park and Event Center will go back in time to the tumultuous period of the Civil War.
The North Texas History Center, in partnership with the Collin County Commissioners Court, Collin County Historical Commission, and Myers Park and Event Center will sponsor one of North Texas’ largest living history events.
The two day event will portray North Texas circa 1860-1865 by bringing together hundreds of living history re-enactors. These fine and talented people will present aspects of life in the 1860s by depicting: Life on the Home Front, Battles, Life in Camp, and much more.
The re-enactment will include cannons, cavalry and infantry, authentic period military camps, period and current day vendors, concerts by a Confederate brass band, and much more, all up close and personal on 165 acres of rolling land and trees in McKinney, Texas!

STORY TIME
11 a.m. Tuesdays: Story time at Stonebriar Centre
The big kids are back in school, so mark your calendar and gather up all the little ones and head to Story Time at Pottery Barn Kids at Stonebriar Centre every Tuesday in September. The free sessions usually begin around 11 a.m., but interested parents or caregivers are asked to call 972-731-8912 to confirm the time.
Children will receive an official Book Club Card at their first Story Time, and the Card is stamped for each attendance. When the Card has five stamps, Pottery Barn Kids will issue the cardholder a $10 coupon that can be used in the store.
Pottery Barn Kids is on the upper level near the main entrance. Story Time is free and reservations are not necessary.

-We are going to "Stomp Out Hunger" across the city of Mckinney raising $28,000 to donate to the North Texas Food Bank on behalf of EVERY citizen in Mckinney.
-We will also "PINK OUT" our football game against Jesuit on October 30th in honor of the fight against Breast Cancer, offering free breast cancer exams at the game.

FLU SHOTS
The Collin County Health Care Clinic is now offering flu shots. These vaccinations will be offered Monday through Friday from 8 to 11 a.m. and from 1 to 4 p.m. at 825 N. McDonald Street in McKinney. Both Medicare Part B and Medicaid will be accepted.
For those without Medicare Part B or Medicaid, the flu shot for an adult is $20 and for children the cost ranges from $0 to $14 depending on income. However, no child will be turned away. To determine the availability of the flu vaccines on any given day, call 972-548-5500.
