Coppell scores 21 unanswered to top Marcus

Published: Saturday, October 24, 2009 1:55 AM CDT
LEWISVILLE — Coppell’s football team took a major step toward securing a playoff berth following a 42-21 win against Marcus on Friday in a District 6-5A football matchup.

Coppell quarterback Hayden Hawk completed 25 of 32 passes for 348 yards and four touchdowns while running back Cam McDaniel scored five total touchdowns, including three receiving scores.

Coppell improves to 2-1 in district while the Marauders fall to 1-2. Southlake Carroll leads the district with a perfect 3-0 mark, with Coppell and Flower Mound tied for second and Marcus and Hebron tied for fourth. Next week, the Marauders face the Jaguars while Coppell hosts Lewisville (0-3).

“We lost tonight, and we didn’t play very well,” said Bryan Erwin, Marcus coach. “If we can’t do the basic stuff then we’re going to have a hard time beating Flower Mound.”

The Cowboys built a 20-7 lead before Marcus responded to take a 21-20 advantage early in the third quarter. But Coppell closed the game with 22 unanswered points and limited Marcus’ pounding rushing attack to 17 yards in the second half.

“We just tried to challenge [Marcus] physically in the second half,” said Joe McBride, Coppell coach. “We felt like they big-played us in the first half. We were being pretty sturdy, but they busted some big plays, and we didn’t allow those in the second half.”

For the Cowboys offense, Hawk was on the money from the opening drive. After a pair of incomplete passes to start the game he connected on four straight to lead to a 3-yard touchdown run by McDaniel.

The Coppell defense forced a three-and-out on the ensuing Marcus possession and six plays later Hawk found Jeff Johnson in the end zone for a 7-yard score as Coppell appeared to be on its way, up 13-0.

But Marcus battled back in typical Marauder fashion, marching 69 yards on 12 plays to cut the lead to 13-7. The Marauders gained 48 of those yards on the ground, including a 1-yard quarterback sneak for a touchdown by Brode Boyd.

The Cowboys opened the second quarter with a 45-yard touchdown pass to McDaniel to go up 20-7 however Marcus’ rushing attack continued to be effective.

On consecutive plays, Stephen Hopkins galloped for 27 yards and Dagan Newsome gained 32 yards on a “hide and sneak”, as McBride called it, to move the Marauders in scoring position at Coppell’s 23-yard line before the drive stalled with an interception on fourth-and-11.

Later in the second, a 21-yard scamper by Newsome set up an 11-yard touchdown pass from Boyd to Chris Cahill to make the score 20-14 at the half.

Newsome finished with 71 yards rushing in the game — all in the first half. The story was the same for Hopkins, who totaled 75 yards in the first half on 12 carries but gained just 18 yards on 10 rushes in the second half.

Both teams traded punts to open the third quarter before Marcus gained its first and only lead.

The Marauders scored on a 42-yard touchdown pass from Boyd to receiver Chris Martin, who made a fantastic catch on a jump ball in the end zone over a pair of Coppell defenders.

Hawk and the Cowboys had the answer, though, as three plays later Jeff Johnson made a 67-yard reception and on the following snap Hawk connected with McDaniel to regain the lead, 28-21, following a successful two-point conversion run by McDaniel.

The Marauders would pick up only three first downs the rest of the game, while Hawk hit on his next seven passes to lead Coppell to two more touchdowns, both by McDaniel. He finished the second half 10 of 11 for 159 yards and two scores.

“Hayden’s just a great football player,” McBride said. “I wish he was 6-foot, 3-inches and then everybody in the nation would want him. But he’s 5-11. But I’ll tell you what, I wouldn’t want anybody else no matter how tall they are.”

McDaniel gained 47 yards rushing with two scores and had nine catches for 124 yards and three touchdowns. Bennett Okotcha added seven grabs for 89 yards.

Coppell looks for another win Friday against Lewisville, while Marcus will battle rival Flower Mound at 8 p.m. at Fouts Field in Denton in the “Mound Showdown.”

“I’m not thinking about Flower Mound yet,” Erwin said. “We’ve got to watch the film and figure out a way to regroup and come together as a team. We have to fight and be tough and be loyal to each other. Loyalty is very important.”
